DH Sea Vixen's at North Luffenham

Hi,

I remember doing my MFT (Military Field Training) at North Luffenham in Sept1991, and whilst running around the airfield with guns and thunderflashes going off everywhere, we passed very close to some Sea Vixens. Close enough to read the warning signs nearby that stated that the aircraft shouldn’t be climbed on as the u/c was weak through explosives testing.

I can’t remember whether there were 2 or 3 aircraft, but can anyone give me identities and fates of these aircraft please? I looked at the Thunder and Lightnings site, but to no avail.

Cheers,

C 6

Were these the aircraft that used to be at 1 s of TT ,RAF halton? I have a course photo circa 1986 taken in front of these jets- not sure if that’ll help though!!!

According to Wrecks & Relics 13th Edition, XN699 and XP921 were ex-Halton.

According to Wrecks & Relics 14th Edition the last 3 were XJ608 / XN699 / XP921 and they were scrapped around 1992.

Luffenham Vixen’s

The Vixens were all scrapped by neville martin about 10 years ago various spares off all three aircraft are being used in XJ494’s restoration but only small items the bulk of any usuable item that managed to be saved are held with Dehavilland at bournemouth for possible re-use but a lot went for scrap as the airframes were in a right state neville still remembers doing the job, the nose cone of at least one of the vixen’s is still there as of a month ago when i got permission to look for them as it’s fibreglass it wasn’t of much value, after all i live in married quarters there

Hi Cirrus 6

I don’t know what they had then, but if you look on Google maps now, you can see a Phantom on the Eastern end of the main runway, and a Harrier GR3 on the South of the airfield in a dispersal. No sign of Vixens though.
