DH88 photos (31/01/05)

Today was my trial flying lesson, at Derby and after the lesson they let me take a good look at the DH88 they are rebuilding fly again.

Here are a few low quality even by my standard photos 🙂

Here is the RV3 they are also working on.

oag…that would have been my dad you spoke to (also involved in the project).

danohagan and andrewman
I visited Derby/Egginton last Wednesday(26th Jan) as part of an airfield touring holiday with another member of Oxfordshire Aviation Group(www.communigate.co.uk/oxford/oag).After being given escorted access to the flightline and hangars we were taken into the workshop containing Black Magic. The chap working on her at this point reckoned about 5 years….CAN’T WAIT!!!!!!!

DaveR…while at Derby we picked up one of your leaflets to promote the project within our group…the web-site address quoted on the leaflet was www.cometracer.com.Is this still current or has it changed…I have put this onto the links pages of the Oxfordshire Aviation Group web-site(see above)

Finally, many thanks to Tara of the Derby Aeroclub for escorting and looking after us on our visit..:-)

Black Magic…

As well as my work/research with Typhoons I am also involved with this project (comet racer project group secretary). We are talking years before Black Magic is in the air but as the pictures show work is progressing now, the tailplane is almost complete and we have just finished compiling the cutting list for the wing main spar and we are currently looking into a number of suitable suppliers for material. Hopefully a little later this year we can start working on the jig for this complex job. We also have 3 Gypsy Queen engines in RAF packing crates sitting in the hangar. 2 are time expired and one has some time left, they were all meticulously packed and inhibited by the RAF and they are believed to be ex queens flight. We have opted for these engines because they will not detract from the exterior view, the spares are more readily available and the props can be feathered in case of engine failure (the extra power makes up for the slight increase in weight). I am also in charge of the web site and have to update it over the next week or so for new dates for open days and new pictures. All are welcome to turn up on the open days.

We have an advantage with the rebuild as everything can be handled (paperwork wise) by Airspeed Aviation as Derby.

Dave

p.s. if anyone knows of the whereabout of DH Heron props and hubs let me know

As I said Danohagan it looks like a long term project, but next time I’m their I will ask them about the timescale and let you all know.

Thanks Stieglitz and Damien 🙂 glad you liked the photos, and thanks Robbo for the link.

T J after having a good look at it today, it looks like its going to be a while yet.

But worth waiting for.
