I am pretty sure he had a PPL and owned Piper Cherokee Arrow G-AVXF. This was the first Arrow to appear on the British register…….

In the introduction to “Rat Race” he said that he flew Spitfires and, later, Lancasters and Wellingtons during the 1940s.

Great books even if you didn’t like horses. Thought he had died some time ago, but that was his wife who was also rumoured to co-write his books. Perhaps his son will continue the tradition on his own.

Not a huge fan – though I did use to live in the village he’d lived in until 1986 – but if you read “Flying Finish”, I think you’ll find that it ends at an unnamed airfield that surely must be Llandwrog…

Again, from “Rat Race”:
“We bought three light aircraft, two of them to lease to a flying training school and one, a fast little sports-car equivalent, for Mary to fly personally…….as a result we set up a small professional air-taxi and charter operation”
