dark light

Did you have these in the 60s/70s!!!

When I was a kid in the late 60s, early 70s I had on my bedroom wall a pair of black plastic plaques, picked out in gold and coloured, made by Frank Down Ltd.
One was a Lancaster, the other a Halifax. When I joined up in 74 they were thrown out with the rubbish and duly forgotten about.

I just purchased 2 off Ebay and stuck them up in my studio.

I tried googling Frank Down and nothing

Do you remember them?

I know he did trains, cars and flowers, but what other aeroplanes did he do?

sorry the scan doesn’t do them justice

Baz

Bet you haven’t seen one like this in the last 30 mins Baz;)

Been going through some old stuff & exhumed this, it was given to my (now late) father as a Birthday present by some well meaning soul, I recall Dad being suitably grateful at the time, then giving it to me after him muttering about never having any to do with Hurricanes (he was a WOP/AG on Wellingtons)

The plaque is of a fair size- 18 x 7 inches.

More plaques

I’ve just received 5 steam loco plaques I got on ebay, all unopened..a tenner. Nice.

Morning,

Picked up some nice plaques recently, highlight was a Heinkel HE-111 and JU 87 Stukka. So nearly have the full Luftwaffe set, just the Bf 109 to go. Anyone got a Messerschmitt willing to sell?

Switching sides to the RAF, also some “sky” plaques depicting aerial scenes of a Spitfire, Hurricane, Lancaster and Beaufighter.

Is there a Frank Down plaque of the Wellington bomber?

There was an elderly chap who used to sit in a front office in Godmanchester near Huntingdon drawing things like that a couple of years ago. http://www.geolocation.ws/v/E/1430034/st-marys-street-antique-and-collectables/en

It was a pleasure to watch him at work.

I used to have a whole box full of the Hurricane one. Could hardly give ’em away. Now, I have none.

Having ‘exhumed’ P3059 a couple of years ago I’d quite like to find one, too!!

More from Frank Down and John Crawley

Hi,

New to the forum, hello!

I remember these plaques, it all started for me back at the airshows at Greenham Common airbase in the 1970s when I got the Spitfire. Just re-discovered it while clearing out my late fathers loft. So I have decided to collect a few more!

I now have;

Spitfire MkIIA
Spitfire MkIX
Hurricane II
Lancaster MkI
Lancaster BII
Halifax MkII SRS
Mosquito MkIV
Liberator
Mustang P-51B
Mustang P-51D
Junkers JU-88

Frank Down Ltd I think started with the Prestige Wall Plaques and then John Crawley Ltd Pleasure Plaques (!) under license which were more detailed.

Always looking to add more WW2 planes, no information seems to be available on what was ever produced. But I am aware there night be examples of a Messerschmitt, Stuka, Heinkel, Kitty Hawk, Wellington and a Hurricane MkI. Must be a Flying Fortress too??

Does anyone have a finite list of this set?

I did phone Hendon but all I got was tumbleweed blowing across the desert.

My interest in these items has grown somewhat since my 1st post as I would like to sell them from my ‘Spitfire Exhibition’ (which does a lot for military charities)

oshawaflyboy
Holy cow! I have these on my wall for years.

504k
Hurri

I just didn’t know there were so many!

PanzerJohn good spot, I noticed that on the back of the 504k plaque it was built under licence (the plaque) by HUGH EVELYN LTD. A google search picked up nothing on the name.

thanks for all your inputs so far, it’s a learning curve:)

I checked with my brother and he still has the Lightning plaque I mentioned earlier. Until he told me, I’d entirely forgotten that they also did – a Nimrod! Can’t believe you missed that one Baz!

I’ll take a photo of ’em next time I get a chance 🙂

did it have a refuelling probe?:D
