Did you know…

This is a place to post your aeroplane facts that not many people in the world know.

I’ll start:

Did you know that the Kuomintang (Chinese Nationalists) operated the Heinkel He 111?

Did you know that the last bombing raid on Liverpool destroyed the house of Hitler’s nephew?

Did you know that the US Navy operated the Bristol Bulldog?

Did you know that a helicopter was made Mexico in the 1920’s?

Did you know that the Japanese were experimenting with a trans-pacific bomber called the Nakajima G10N?

Did you know that the Handley-Page V/1500 “Super Handley” was the first truly strategic bomber?

Did you know that 3 Handley-Page V/1500s of No. 166 Squadron RAF were bombed-up and about to taxi out to the runway at RAF Bircham Newton to bomb Berlin when the Armistice was declared?

Did you know that the Handley-Page V/1500 had folding wings?

Did you know:

Much of the metalwork used in the construction of the Hindenburg was salvaged from the wreck of the R101?

That’d be interesting…

That was the carrier version.

V/1500 launching off the HMS Argus? That’d be like launching a Rockwell B-1 off the USS Nimitz!

Did you know…
…that the military P-3 Orion, the beloved sub-hunter of various airforces, still retains the baby milk warmer from the L-188 Electra airliner that it is derived from!

Umm.. I think that might be the radar you’re thinking of.. The P-3 can microwave steaks too!

It gets better.. the ashtray design in question was from a 1936 Ford car. Here’s a Boeing 737 cockpit ashtray (can’t find a pic of the 767 one) and the Ford Tudor from 1936 to prove it. Do I get ‘Nerd of the Year’ for this?

I wonder what sort of Tank was used at the Somme, Arras and Passchendaele prior to Cambrai! The ‘airplane’ was dropping bombs since 1911 at least

1917 BMW founded. Charlie Chaplin signs the first million dollar movie contract. Lenin leads the Russian revolution. British royal family changes name from Saxe-Coburg-Gotha to Windsor. The war tank is introduced, at the Battle of Cambrai. The airplane is used to drop bombs, in Belgium.

No probs, in a strange but true moment, I caught an obit of the chap who played baron munchhausen (?) in the WizofOz, and He did in fact train pilots, (WW2) but obviously was too short to fly combat missions; lived into his nineties, well done that man.

Trained fighter pilots to do what?

Did you know that the Japanese experimented with ‘War Tubas’ intended to dis-orient approaching US aircrews with dreadful oompah music?

You recall correctly, my poor right thumb won’t like that… Is that before or after the tipping of the wink then?!

Unfortunately, if you don’t know, it’s not something I can reveal – you’ll just have to trust to luck and see what happens……
