I went to a department store this afternoon. I felt like spending money. I have been looking for digital camaras. Anyone could recommend me any. I´ve seem some nice examples of reflex Minolta, 10X, and lots of Pixels at 1500€. Too much. I love taking pics to planes and I digital camaras are great. But I am not a real fun of photography (only when I travel), so I am not conviced of making a good use of a real good digital camara. Someone has recommended me to get a cheap one just to try. Is it difficult to make digital photographs?

RE: Digital camaras
Have anyone has a Fujifilm 6900 Zoom or S602 Zoom?. These are the ones I like the most. 2832×2128 pixel and 6X zoom. They cost around
1200 and 900 euros (same in dollars). I found them a bit expensive, but I have been told, they are great in terms of performance.

RE: Digital camaras
Well, it seems that it´s obvious that money is needed for something reasonable decent.

RE: Digital camaras
Having done some digital camera work here at my job (covering news stuff for my newspaper’s website is part of it) with a basic 3.3MPix Sony DSC-1P camera, i think i can suggest you NOT to go for a Sony. The sturdiness of the cameras is poor as quite a few of the cameras we had at our disposal started to suffer from malfunctions within 6 months. This would be OK, but the customer support from Sony is not the way you’d like it. You would even have to look really hard to download their support software if you’d need it for some reason (something Canon has absolutely no problem with, for example). Also, the price of Sony’s memorystick is high compared to other systems. A 128MB Memorystick goes for some 150 Euros over here (only a matter of days before the euro passes the dollar – 99.3 dollarcents }>).
In general, i think you can best ignore the digital zoom function such cameras offer, and take much more note of the optical zoom. Unless the weather is very clear, such digital zooms suck away all light at an alarming rate which very quickly ruins your pictures in both colour and resolution. Also, for action shots you’ll need a more expensive camera with a decent lense for abovementioned reasons but also because of the autofocus – a basic camera is already slow in focusing, but the small size makes them almost impossible to hold steady especially when photographing moving objects.
Nevertheless, such cameras are fun to work with. Making MPEGs is great!

Arthur

Keltic,
Try http://www.dpreview.com if you are serious about spending some real money. My brother just bought the amazing Canon A40 for AUD$800 after reading about it from this site.
Me? I will upgrade to either an SLR or digital in time, depends…
Regards, Glenn.

RE: Digital camaras
what Roger said is very true, but if you have the money and like all technology stuff, you buy it to play it, not to look pretty. If you don’t need it now, then don’t buy it, because it’ll become much cheaper. If you need it now, go buy it and don’t wait because you’re just giving yourself another excuse to wait for the n+1 model. A good zoom lense ones are usually around $1000 dollars, if not more.

RE: Digital camaras
There are hardly any affordable digital camera’s around today that are suited for action aviation photography. Today, to shoot aircraft at an airfield or airshow, a 300 mm has more or less become a “standard” lens. The cheaper digitals are hardly offering more than 2 or 3 times zoom, which simply isn’t enough. The zoom must be an analog one, digital zoom only means that an enlargement is made of part of the ccd screen. This means that severe loss of quality is encountered when using the digital zoom. My videocamera has a 10 times analog, and a 120 times digital zoom. I can only use the 10 time zoom. A second problem is the printing quality. If you want your digital prints printed to eg 20 by 30 cm, you must have at least a 3m camera. If it is for “on the screen” only, a low resolution camera is enough, but then you still have the lack of zoom. Digital photography is still very “new”. Every 6 months that you wait, you can get better value for money. The old generation camera’s (everything older than 8 months) can then be bought for 30 to 50% of todays price, while the :new” ones are more expensive, but also better. My advise is till buy a good reflex camera with a good lens, and wait for the digital revolution to end. In a year or two. I am still working on analog camera’s, and I wait untill the Canon 1D or the Canon F-60 are being replaced by a new model, and then I buy either of these two. If you only want a camaro to put your pictures on the computerscreen, then buy one. Otherwise,it pays to wait.

I want it for pictures of planes in motion and good resolution. Thanks for your recommendations.

RE: Digital camaras
I got a tiny Canon (S110 I guess) on last year in LA and that’s just perfect.
Easy to use and fast to transfert on a computer.

RE: Digital camaras
oh, i see, it is software modified to 12.1 mega pixels, basically, the Camera takes multiple fast shots at a offset and weave them together. But the 6 megapixel is still rather impressive. Notice the lack of MPEG format, meaning it can’t be used to make movie clips. Since memory are getting cheaper and cheaper everyday, a 3mpixel camera with MPEG option (in such mode it’s usually derated to ~1Mpixel resolution at 30fps or less) means that bigger memory will allow you to take digital video for tens of minutes, if not hours(when flash goes to GBs, the biggest i’ve seen for ~$200 dollars is 512Mb). But again, if it’s just for fun and you’re not too into photography (if you are, you would get a film camera anyways) then buy a cheapy one and it’ll do just fine.

wow really 12mpixles, is that software enhanced or actual, i’ll check it out. As to the size of the Camera, Cannon offers very small sizes for 3 mpixels, so shat the guy before said is not true }>

RE: Digital camaras
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 18-06-02 AT 02:02 AM (GMT)]when you say camaras, you mean still pictures right(some do have MPEG caps, but mostly is for stills)? Many cameras these days goes much higher in pixels, something like at least 3 megapixels is a must. Also, you must have anything better than a USB1 connection to download your pictures or you’ll wait forever. If you’re deciding what kind of memory format, unless you can afford it, the SONY format (memory stick) costs the most. If you want lot’s of pictures in one flash card, use the standard compact flash cards. that costs less than $60 dollars in the US for 128Mbs…that’s hundreds of JPEG formatted pictures even at max resolution! A 3Mega Pixel camera can be bought in the US for less than $400 dollars for a good brand. Remember, a USB connection or better (Firewire) is a must, unless you don’t mind unloading your memory cards and dock them in to your computer. good luck, digital cameras are cool and you sure will save a lot of film money soon…
by the way, if you want a cheap one to just try for fun, it would cost about $150 for a 1.5MPixel one, but keep in mind those uses serial downloads so it’ll take a while.

RE: Digital camaras
I recomend getting just a 1 megapixal camera which is the most you want if you want to post stuff on the web or just like taking alot of snapshots. Digital cameras have become just unbelievable in features and low price over what they were just a year or two ago. I recomend the BenQ (formerly Acer) DC1300. This camera is 1.3 Mpxl, weighs 2.2 oz, costs $87 and is able to take video and record .wav audio.
