Guys-
Venturing over here from the AFM board, some of them guys said this was the place to ask about digital cameras.
Thing is, I’m getting one relatively soon, and I need some help picking the right one. I want to be able to take decent pictures at airshows and the like, so what do I need? The camera I’m looking at is the new Olympus C-740UZ. It has a 10x optical zoom lens, a USB connection, and a bunch of features which I just don’t understand 😀
From what I gather researching on the web, I need a pretty fast shutter speed for moving images. The C-740UZ has a shutter speed of 1/1000 sec-16 sec, manually changeable. Is 1/1000 sec fast enough for a fast-moving object? Also has an aperture range of f2.8/3.7-f8 (I won’t even pretend to understand that). Here’s a link to the complete specs:

Will this work for me? Will I get good still pictures regardless of the moving image quality? Thanks for all of the assistance you may have to offer!

Thanks for all the info guys. Greatly appreciated. I’m checking that dpreview.com website now.

I’ve got the C700UZ
Not tried it on fast jets, but it’s good enough for all other things, especially considering that it’s £1000 cheaper than a digital slr

Biggest problem is that you cant take multiple shots quickly and that the zoom is slow
Cracking little camera for its cost and size though
Just wish I had the money to upgrade my 500N’s to D10s

My new 10D operates with, it seems, the same speed as my fim bodies in every way. Im well chuffed with it so far. Lag is a problem from months ago with D SLRs – a long time in digital imaging terms.

DSLR’s also suffer from ‘shutter lag’ so paying the price difference may not make much of a difference.
www.dpreview.com is a good website for digital camera info

With this type of camera’s there is often a delay between the pushing of the button, and the time that the actual photo is made. This can mean that you are not photographing the moment you have choosen, but the moment half a second later! If you push with the aircraft flying full frame, you can end up with a shot of only the tailsection leaving the photo, or with no aircraft at all. Apart from this, the camera need some time to write the photo down, which can also take some seconds (during which you can not photograph). Have a look at dpreview.com , I’ll guess it is already tested there, and they also have an Olympus forum where you can asked your questions to the actual users of the camera. For digital action photography, a dslr is best, and a camera as the D30 is now second hand not much more that the Olympus, while a top of the art 10D can be get for around $1300. BW Roger

$499 US (around 350 UK pounds I think). What do you mean by shutter delay? 1/1000 sec isn’t fast enough? That is the fastest manual setting.

Without doubt this camera can produce great pics of static and slow moving objects. However, if you want to take shots of aircraft in the air (or other “action” work , I am afraid it has some serious disadvantages ( like eg shutter delay). What does it cost , as maybe the price difference between it and a dslr is worth considering ? Bw Roger
