Digital cameras – advice please

I am thinking about buying a digital camera, preferably an SLR with the equivalent of 300mm zoom capability (what is that in optical zoom terms?). Can anybody advise on what to look for etc. (eg the Fuji Finepix looks promising – is it?) It would primarily be used at airshows, hence the zoom capability, but I don’t know where to start. Also, is it possible on digital SLRs to use lenses from conventional cameras (currently I have a Minolta Dynax) rather than have to purchase new ones, assuming that the digital camera doesn’t have them? Finally, what photography magazine(s) would you reccommend for advice?

Thanks in anticipation!

In a few months time, Minolta will be introducing a DSLR, the Maxxum 7. You can use your Minolta AF lenses on that one without any problems. It will be an 6mp one ( I believe). I went to a big photo exhibition here in Holland yesterday, and it was introduced there. As I am a Canon worker I didn’t pay the Minolta stand a lot of attention as I was “playing” with the Canon 1D mark II which wilol replace my 10D asap (anybody interested in a used 10D and a digi Eos-1n?).

I too can vouch for the 10D, only problem is decent lenses are costly, I’m still paying off the body and working with my cheapo Canon lenses from cheaper film SLR’s I’ve had over the years.

One day I will bow to Snapper’s superior optical capabilities:D

But yes, for airshows and inflight stuff you really need the flexibility an SLR offers. With a lot of the cheaper non SLR types by the time the “shutter” releases, your fast moving jet is miles away.:p

If you’ve got the money (ie about £1200) go for the Canon EOS 10D. You then need to choose a lens. I’m not aware of any Minolta digital SLR’s, but the Canon takes the same lenses as the film bodies. There is also the cheaper one, the 300D. Same chip, but cheaper build and a few functions missing. 10D is the business though. If you want, you can take a trip out here and have a play with mine.
