Disappearing aircraft in Hull

Thinking of all the aircraft ive seen on my travels one still eludes me. many years ago oposite the airfix factory in hull, on the other side of the road behind the garage there was a fuslage of an aircraft quite similar to a dakota but shorter, it was white with a faded horizontal red stripe from nose to tail and an RAF roundel with the wings removed which were behind it.

It was there for a number of years then vanished without trace, was it a dakota? if it wasnt what was it? where did it come from? where did it go? who owned it? how did it get there? does it still exist? what was the history behind it? any help would be great as this is a total mystery thats been bugging me for years, if anyone can solve this there is a beer for them.

Varsity nose

The following is the text of an e-mail that I received today, if you recognise yourself or know of this person could you please ask him to contact me.
Derek, website owner.

“I have had a request to help trace this gentleman – not much to go on but if you know him please let me know and ask him to contact Wright’s Garage to let them know what he wants doing with the Varsity Nose..

Below is a copy of the email I received.

Subject: WL627

Further to my previous comments, Anthony Wright has been pruning – and then some. The Varsity nose is now in a bit of a state, but I have the full recent story which may be of interest.

Apparently, some guy who lived Finningley way dropped in to Wright’s garage and put a deposit on the Varsity nose. It seems his dad had been in the RAF and been with 6 FTS. He was intending to start some sort of enthusiast/preservation group over there. About three years ago, he popped in one Saturday and paid the balance and said he would be back with a truck on Monday. He never showed – and Anthony doesn’t now know his name. So he hasn’t liked to get rid of the nose because it isn’t his – but it’s just been left there! If any reader knows who this guy is, can you get him to contact Wrights garage.”

I remember visiting an ATC squadron in Hull in early 1983. This squadron had in its possession an Auster. Not sure which squadron or what aircraft, though?

Over to you…

AFAIUI, it went to the Auster Group at Widmerpool, Notts, then to the group at Eggesford, who very kindly (!) sent me a recent photo of a collection of steel tubes.

Jack, you have a PM, in reply to yours.

I saw something some where quite recently (cant for the life of me think where, sorry) saying the cockpit had been paid for but not collected. The owner or custodian now I guess, was trying to track them down.

It’s listed, in the latest “Wrecks & Relics,” as being in Wright’s Garage, Staithes Road, Preston, East yorkshire, on the B1239 north of Hedon.

Anyone know if this Vickers Varisty cockpit has been sold or did the sale fall through and is she still in situ?

Dragging this zombie thread up again to ask if anybody knows why WL627’s sale fell through and it is still in situ ?

The airframe was in a different yard and I guess with the level of interest the yard owners decided it wasn’t worthwhile to pay the cost of transport as a whole.

I’ll dig into the recent history and respond asap.
As is so often the case, the action has had to be a case of saving the section before it ends up at the end of a torch, and on that basis i’m sure all would agree it’s a small step in the right direction for her.

The new potential owner is one of my XS186 crewmen, and with his permission i’ll give out some detail later, and maybe a pic if he’s o.k. to release one before the final payment is made and the cockpit is actually handed over.

Here are a couple of shots that Relightflynn9 asked me to upload on behalf of the owner.
