The airlines seem to be able to get away with charging what they like and lumping it under ‘tax’. I wish they would be honest and advertise the actual cost including taxes. Shame on the Advertising Standards Authority for not holding the carriers to book. The ASA is suppose to look after consumers not greedy, crafty airlines!

“APD is levied on the carriage, from a UK airport, of chargeable passengers on chargeable aircraft.

As of 1 April 2001 the rates of duty are

Standard rates:

£10 for EEA destinations, certain dependant territories of EU member states, all EU applicant countries and Switzerland

£40 for all other destinations

Reduced rates (for the lowest class of travel):

£5 for EEA destinations, certain dependant territories of EU member states, all EU applicant countries and Switzerland

£20 for all other destinations.”

Obviously, you also have to consider the charges levied in the other country (if not the UK).

Danairboy.

Absolutely disgraceful! And no Devonshire cream teas served either.

How much is air passenger duty? I don’t know how much it is. And how much is covered by airport taxes? Is there a set rate? Does it vary from airport to airport or regionally? How much covers security? Are there other variables which should be taken into account? How much is levied by the CAA and how much by the airport?

When you’ve answered all the questions above we might just have a chance of deciding just how ‘disgraceful’ it is.

kev35

I was comparing it to the other low cost airlines as that seems only fair to compare like with like.

flybe one way tickets outprice easyJet return tickets on same route alot of the time i look at dates for flights.

Then they should include it in the price of the fare and stop misleading the travelling public by advertising fares that dont exist!

Andrew,

As Mark said the taxes/charges cover a wide range of items APD tax, Fuel Surcharge, passenger service charges, Insurance Surcharge, Security Surcharge.

Apart from APD (Air Passenger Duty), each operator’s charges are different. In the case of the pax service charge, these are different from airport to airport. Several of the large lo-cost operators have done ‘deals’ with airports to either reduce or negate passenger service charges, which is one of the reasons why their charges are generally lower than other operators.

Listen to the Chancellors next budget speech and note how much duty is on domestic and international flights. I assure you it is significantly less than Mr French is charging his passengers! Oh, well someones got to pay for those new Q400s.

Andrew I agree with you, its a disgrace! All the airlines are at it, we know their game. We know how much is Air Passenger duty and how much is going in their back-pockets.

Its a racket. The so called taxes keep going up and up and up!

Airport Taxes and Charges. Taxes are government controlled. Charges can cover a multitude of sins and is very ambiguous. In most cases it is just extra airport charges, although other odd things can be added in too. This is probably just a policy change from one or more of the airports FlyBe serves
