Been sad to see on my travels during the last couple of weeks that one of the 1930’s hangars at Dishforth (the furthest one from the A1, whatever number it is) is being demolished. Shame, the hangars there are one of my favourite landmarks on my usual boring schlepp up and down the country. According to the guys working on it I was talking to last night in the pub in Boroughbridge, they sure knew how to build them properly back then, because it ain’t giving in easily!
Just thought this might be of interest if there were any ex-Dishforth chaps frequented the forum.

…And then it was gone. Nothing but a heap of rubble now. 🙁

Yes it is a newer 2548/55c ‘split vertical’ type tower, standard 1950s repalcement on alot of older and expansion period airfields. Not sure on Dishforth in particular but most were erected late ’50s early ’60s, there probably was a smaller one (guessing ‘fort’ type) in front of the hangars.
I think that the entry for Dishforth in the ‘Action Stations’ series has a photograph of a ‘fort’ type watch office.

Whenever i’ve driven past Dishforth i have always thought it odd that the current control tower is on the north side of the airfield, far away from the main airfield site and hangars. I realise that is not unique to Dishforth, but was there ever an earlier tower nearer the hangars.?

It’s a few years since I was a regular on the north/south route and rmember well the Dishforth hangars. You don’t much of an excuse to pull something old but with a bit of history, down these days.:(

Down to just the wall facing the airfield now by the look of things :(.
Go on Scott, get em posted!

THe guys I was talking to said asbestos, but reckoned it was in such small quantities it was being used as an excuse to pull the thing down. Shame…
