You think, for instance, British Airways would not clean up sick, roster crews on so often they are badly fatigued, have aircrew so terrified of being sacked they can’t even offer the basic common courtesy of supplying drinks to passenger who’ve been held inside a hot aeroplane in a hot country for 3 hours? I think not.

Having particpated in a market research study involving airline chief medical officers for a company that wanted to sell kits for “bio-fluid spills” on airliners, I hesitate to identify them but there are quite a few airlines that as company policy do (or more accurately, at the time of surveying did) not clean up sick. I draw a veil over how they dealt with other bio-spills ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

And yes I’ve been on a flight that was delayed a number of hours on the ground where they would not serve us drinks ‘because ATC might give us an early departure and we need to be ready to leave right away’. SAfter an hour that excuse began to wear thin.

The downward pressure on costs has affected all airlines and, sadly, in recent years the take it or leave it attitude of staff has not been limited to the LCCs. I have seen it personally in other airlines this last year or two.

And as for safety lapses can I remind the House of a certian Malaysian airline that flew aircraft to the UK with the minimum of fuel with the result that it was very nearly banned from UK airspace after a number of fuel related diversions.

I hold no particular brief for supporting Ryanair but I don’t think they are the only one that fingers could be pointed at.

Well I am from the other side… a travel agent. We book people with them quite a lot as we are close to Luton and Stansted. What do they offer apart from cheeper seats (and often they are not cheeper than say BA or Aer Lingus) that would make somebody fly with them. To the general public who do have an intrest in the aviation – what would they make of it? – Not much I think, It didnt really say anything that they didnt know already.

Probably a bit played up for the TV but wasnt it convient that Ryanair didnt have a log of anything that they were showing, even though they were showing it in “PLANE” black and white.

the programme would have been quick to point out that it is illegal to open a sealed bar on an aircraft.

This has been mentioned a couple of times recently. Just a point of fact, whilst it may not be a given airlines policy to do so, it is not illegal to open drinks bars on the ground other than in the country the bars were provided. Even then, under certain delay situations permission can be quickly and easily obtained from the bonded store that provided them. It just means the airline has to pay duty on the contents.

As for the programme, I forgot it was on. Oops!

Well first night back in the UK for 3 months and a whole programme dedicated to my least favourite “airline”, it doesn’t get much better than that! Seriously though for me no great surprises in this show. Having worked close to, though thankfully not for, Ryanair- its all old news. But I am glad that C4 have highlighted some aspects of this enterprise, as old hacks on here will know I have never hidden my dislike for these kind of outfits, I never use them and never will. There are serious issues here especially in the current climate with ref to security….staff concocting references, seemingly meaningless exams relating to passenger safety, security passes laying around crew rooms, these were kept in a safe in our ops! . All in all a sad picture.. what has modern civil aviation come to. These “airlines” have done nothing to enhance the pay and conditions of the staff in our industry…those who think they have need to wake up and smell the coffee. In 22 yrs of an airline career I never thought I’d live to see the day when I would see the Captain of an airliner wimpering to a delayed passenger about the security of his job and family for handing over a few fizzy drinks.
It could be argued that as the people keep coming back for more then they actually have the “airlines” they deserve….But does it have to be this way?
All I can say is thank God for the VIP/Corporate Jet sector that I inhabit now.

I watched the programme with a neutral view ie. I have flown and would fly Ryanair again but I am not too impressed with their customer service. The incident that did suprise me was the captain’s comments like “the passengers paid nothing so shouldn’t expect anything”; this is complete rubbish. Firstly there is a basic standard of service that anyone can expect ie. if a flight is delayed 3 hours it’s not unreasonable to expect at least some soft drinks and communication with passengers regards a potential diversion airport. Additionally how does the pilot know they paid nothing? Does he know the exact price that every passenger paid?..I doubt it. I’ve travelled on Ryanair with people that have paid anything from 99p to ยฃ100 for the same flight. At the end of the day passengers will vote with their feet and Ryanair don’t seem to suffer despite these kind of reports.

Ryanair are an easy target (especially given that they are a foreign airline) but I am pretty sure that similar concerns could be raised about any airline.

In any case, this type of sensational ‘journalism’ by television production companies just makes me want to throw the tv out of the window.

Here, Here.

Referance the quote that Ryanair wouldn’t give an interview, the corrispondances on the Ryanair website seem tol indicate the only interview offered would have been an edited version – Ryanair requested an unedited version from how I understand it.

Personally I will continue, where the times and destinations suit me, continue to use Ryanair.

Did it teach us anything we didn’t know already? We know that Ryanair have tight turnarounds and little is possible between flights; cleaning up, thorough security checks etc.

I think this programme was seriously over-rated and I’m convinced that it has done nothing but throw more publicity Ryanair’s way.

I’m slightly disappointed at Channel 4 for saying this programme was on from 8.00pm until 9.00pm, when it didn’t start until about 8.10pm and it finished at 8.55pm. Mind you, after 45 minutes of it, I was getting bored. This was nothing new.

Edit: Ryanair do crack me up. Take a look at the correspondence between the Production Company and Ryanair here.. http://www.ryanair.com/site/EN/inpage.php?partner=DISPATCHES Ryanair are saying that some of the footage was set-up and wasn’t on a Ryanair aircraft. With that aside, how do they justify their staff saying such obscene things about passengers and their safety?

T5, to me Ryanair mentioned that the trailors for the programme were staged, no other claims.

On a seperate note, I have flown Ryanair 4 sectors before and have no reservations about my next four.

I really felt sorry for that captain who was demoted, as he said he just couldn’t do more sectors, and to think he had been there for 10 years!

Terrible!

Just saw the prgramme at college, and have to say, some things were very appalling. Ah well, wouldn’t stop me flying with them! Some parts were funny too.

Has not changed my opinion about Ryanair – never flown with them and never will.

Same here I am afraid, I will certainly not be booking with Ryanair in the near future, if at all.

I am however flying LTN-GLA-LTN on 8/3 with EasyJet to evaluate them as part of a university project…which should be an interesting experience, seeings as I have never flown a low-cost airline before.

About DISPATCHES Program:

The thing which most annoys me about these kind of programs is there isnt any balance between the arugements that are put forward…

3. Ryanair has offered the programme a live or an unedited prerecorded interview with CEO, Michael Oโ€™Leary in order to allow Ryanair to fairly respond in the programme to these allegations. The Dispatches documentary has refused all of these offers.

I am :confused::confused: by this, as I am sure it was the other way round. Didn’t Dispatches ask for an interview with him but he declined…
