I was standing in the library of my home; Rangoon Towers, running over in my mind the possibility of an extended stay in that most fascinating of Far Eastern countries, Burma or, as the geopolitical revisionists would now say; Myanmar, thinking about the endless opportunities for archaeological discoveries mersed in the gentle surroundings of that age old culture, when my reverie was momentarily sundered.
My attention had wandered to sundry prints and paintings of different aircraft accompanied by various models liberally distributed over the walls and shelves of my home. As an idle exercise, I counted eight prints or paintings of various aircraft ranging from a Robin HR 100 to a Lancaster and six different scale models including three Mosquito’s, two Spitfires and a 172.
I though that it would be easy to work out my enthusiasms. But, I’m just as keen on boats, particularly sail boats. Strangely I have just two models, one photo and one magnificent painting of the Cutty Sark beating up the Channel and painted by Bill Bishop. I can’t work out why, given an equal appeal in my life why I have markedly more of one than the other.
I have friends who are steam locomotive buffs. You wouldn’t think so from what you see in their home. Others who are train or aircraft spotters do not, as a rule, collect models. It would be interesting to get some idea of the totals of models, either aircraft or whatever, owned by the members of this Forum. I get the feeling that it won’t be many.

That’s another problem – photo albums of all odd sizes and colours. What a storage problem they are but the contents are too precious to throw out.
Same here.I have over 300 boxes of slides, probably 40 scrapbooks full of photos. One answer is to digitize your negatives and slides,it will be a soul destroying long term project but get a scanner and break the project into bite size pieces and you will make inroads. You then have all your photos on dvd’s and h/drives and the photo albums can be boxed up and stored.
You will also bring some old photos and memories back out and i donated all my old work photos [ digital copies] to a website for other interested people.

It’s books that give my interests away. My bookshelves are tightly packed with aviation related material. I have a golden rule now that if I buy a new one I have to dispose of another of equal size. You will only find one model which has survived because it is in a case. I have made dozens over the years both flying and static but only photographs of them remain. That’s another problem – photo albums of all odd sizes and colours. What a storage problem they are but the contents are too precious to throw out.

No models here, not enough room and with pets and children.I do have several limited edition aviation prints, they are also stored away as we have no room on the walls.
Book cases full of books and my LP collection which i did manage to blag back down from the loft.
Books range from mostly aviation to general history ,art and gardening.
In the summer i tend to move into the conservatory with the dogs ,washing and clutter and sit there with my paints and radio–TV free area 🙂

Mine are/ were predominantly aviation, cricket and film orientated and comprised books, predominantly plus a few model aircraft (no model cricketers but various cricketing memorabilia). However that’s in the past due to the major downsizing operation when we moved to Kent – twice!!
I took up aircraft modeling again and am assembling a smallish collection but space will determine the size of the fleet!
So my much reduced collection is probably no longer representative of my interests.
An interesting question, though.
