Does advertising work on you

Personally i don’t think i have bought anything because of TV advertising, infact if the advert annoys me enough i deliberately boycott it.
At the moment there are several annoying adverts ,especially for banks [who i thought were broke } but they still pay sports figures to sell their products.
Would you buy a product because a celebrity says so even though they probably have no qualifications to endorse a product.

Or, better still, knock the cost of advertising off their products

Well, there we are then. Proof positive that advertising has no effect whatsoever.

Somebody should tell all the manufacturers, just think of all the money they would save.

I too am going to follow the general consensus and say I don’t think a tv commercial has ever affected a purchase of mine. But that doesn’t mean I don’t find some adverts great to watch, VW are usually very good 😀

Nope and neither does running a compendium of highlights of the current series of Top Gear at the end of the ever shorter new series, padding it out with the three of them regurgitating the last of several episodes simply gets it deselected from my record facility. They must thing we are stupid.

As for ads, as said I record and fast fwd.

Biggest bugbear is F1 I like to watch qualifying, but to record that on Sky F1 it records 1st 2nd and 3rd practice as well, when will they learn not all people want to watch all of that, hence practice is now recorded on the Beeb.
And the Race, 1st few on Sky you could record just that missing out all the pre race dross, or add it to as another programme, now you can’t, not only that but it’s now padded out with post race dross, the Malaya GP was recorded and took up 20% of my HD recording room and was 5 hours!!!!!!!!!

Watching either is a case of selecting a start point 1 hour into the programme then fast forwarding to the race.

I buy Windmill Ground flour, but only having watched “Dusty Miller” Dougal, Brian, and Zeberdee on the Magic Roundabout.
Nothing to do with advertising I know, just liked the program 😉

The “Esso Blee-dooler” and the “Cadbury’s Smash tin men” were two of my favourites, but I never recall buying Esso Blue paraffin or Smash potatoes as a result.

Simple answer to that question is “No.”

I seldom watch TV; the programmes that I do watch are recorded to my PVR, so I can skip the annoying overly loud BS that assaults one’s senses during the ad breaks.

I don’t recall a single instance of me ever having bought something through having seen some vacuous celeb advertising it on TV.

I do remember ads from years ago because they had novelty value, I suppose and were often very amusing

The ones that spring to mind here is the one for “Meow Mix” cat food, “Kia-Ora” and “Um Bongo”.
(Latter two were revolting, and I can’t possibly comment on how tasty the cat food was.)

The one that alights on my mammaries is for Quantam dishwasher tablets where that bl00dy woman tries to sound like the divine Amanda Burton (Silent Witness, Brookside) rhyming it with “Phantom” and drawling about “The Diamond Standard” But seriously, I think advertisers rely on what they call “brand awareness” when we go shopping, rather than consciously buying something on the strength of seeing any particular advert.

Likewise. What really gets me annoyed, is that tiresome commercial for a particular feminine hygiene product, where we’re treated to a jolly little animation of a woman about to tear her furniture apart, and her poor dog too, due to feminine itching. The damn thing always seems to always appear just as you’re sitting down to your evening meal. Can you imagine the outcry from some, if we were treated at tea time, to a cheeky little animated commercial, advertising ‘Scroteeze THE answer to every mans personal hygiene problems’ I can.

Of course, it could be argued, that the very fact that I remember that particular advert, is proof that advertising works. But I’m not the target audience, and I sure as hell am not going to recommend a product in that category, to any of my female friends 😉

Haven’t watched any adverts for some time now. I record everything on commercial TV and then fast forward the adverts when they come on. Wonderful things those hard drive box jobbies.

Absolutely NOT.
It’s bad enough living in a “Nanny State” without others on TV trying to tell you what you should buy, over their rivals.
