I was watching a TV programme with a friend recently about Steve McQueen and it was saying he had a collection of Aircraft, It did not mention what ones, I knew he had collected bikes and cars but have found nothing about Aircraft with regards to him. I would love to know more on this side of him.

Gillespie is in California. I believe it was this Stearman that somebody jumped out of in 2004.
You are right, amazing what you can learn from this forum!

One of McQueen’s Stearman was N3188 (75-2599). This aircraft was restored for him in the 70’s and was in a silver and black markings. This aircraft was used to scatter his ashes over Pacific as McQueen considered it to be his favourite aircraft.
3188 was McQueens old school number.
The aircraft has been owned, at least since 2000, by Willis M Allen III and has been part of the Allen Airways Flying Museum, Gillespie Field, El Cajon, Texas. It has also been noted in the Phoenix area where Mr Allen lives

I believe he also had a Cessna 501SP Citation Jet which was in Colorado for a while.

The Pitcairn was registered N10753, he also had two Stearmans, one of these is now owned by a Country Music star called Roy Clark.

McQueen owned a Pitcarin Mailwing…this was sold at auction.
He also had a Piper L-4. I saw the L-4 listed in Trade-A-Plane for sale a decade or so ago for the (then) slightly high price of $35,000. I’ve been kicking myself ever since. It was listed for quite awhile, then relisted. My wife even wishes I’d bought it.
He kept an hangar at Santa Paula airport outside of LA.

I only know that he owned a Stearman of some kind – unfortunately the biography I have of him is A) in the attic, somewhere, and B) doesn’t give any other details apart from that!
It was, apparently, used to scatter his ashes after his funeral.
I do know that he learned to fly gliders in preparation for his role in The Thomas Crown Affair.
The IMDB mentions that McQueen was:
Issued a private pilot’s license by the FAA in 1979 after learning to fly in a Stearman bi-plane, which he purchased for that purpose. After his death it was sold at auction, along with his large collection of vehicles, in 1982.
Not a big help, I know! 😮
