Here’s a challenge for you all!!!
We are looking for a Mid-Upper turret for Just Jane, either a FN50 or a Martin 250CE – either would be appropriate.
We would prefer to fly her with a turret fitted- in which case we would like an original- otherwise we use its fairing as fitted during the maritime service for L’Aeronavale.
Anyone got one in their garden shed?
Answers on a postcard……..or here

RB,
Did he? Where? I shall move to have him tarred and feathered if he said such a thing!
Personally, I’ll be surprised if it ever flies again. I’ll be very pleased if it does, but surprised.
The Big Red Doom Of Doom was issued for this particular post sir!
Further apologies AndyG!

Ignore the DOOMSTERS!
(With apologies to the originator on the ‘558 thread of the red bit above!)
Duty doomster here. How come ‘Peter the Moderator’ can say, you don’t actually need a mid-upper turret and walk away unscathed, and I get ripped to pieces for saying the same thing? Ho hum.
Anyway, just got an invite to the 65th anniversary ‘do’ at EK in August. It’ll be nice to have a look around the old girl again.
Pip pip

Could you just fabricate a brand new one?
I understand you want original as much as you can.

Type and manufacturer?

I think he was making a more general observation, in that the RAF, when displaying their aircraft, spend most of the display showing us the bottom. True, there are rare glimpses of a top view, but you only get one, maybe two, chances if you’re lucky.
Of course, now we’ll be redirected to hundreds of photos of BBMF topsides. Sods law.
Edit: I should read the whole thread before making comments. π π
Thanks Rob, thats exactly what I meant, but it was said with tongue in cheek:D I have the utmost respect for all the members of the Flight and the
work they do.
Phil.

What a bizarre post Bruggen, the BBMF Lanc normally does a flypast at a slight bank to show off the top side.

Andrew, fitting an appropriate turret type would be the iciing on the cake for NX611. If one cannot be found right away, this shouldnt hold up the return to flight project. BBMF and CWH lancs both flew with the top turret missing at first.

A member of my family spent his war in a Lanc Mid-upper turret, the more I research the more it appears that’s where he lost his life too, rather than in the W/op position as we believed.
So I for one hope you can source the turret. Ignore the DOOMSTERS!

Retreatingblade, it is a shame that you have negative feelings towards the possible return to airworthiness, but everyone has their own opinion and many people died for freedom of speech, so each to their own. Hopefully we will be able to turn your opinions around some day.
The current configuration with the use of the turret cupola is not satisfactory for flight so we would need to either source a turret or fit the infill panel, we would hate for a turret to be the one thing that holds us back.

Yes AndyG – It was a ventral turret
By: AndyG - 23rd March 2010 at 23:03
There was a photo on either here or WIX showing a mid upper turret from a Lanc somebody had found in OZ the Frazer Nash version if memory serves me correctly no so long ago?
Wasn’t that the ultra rare ventral turret?

Priorities?
Hmmm. With respect, and without wishing to dampen the obvious enthusiasm; if you are going to return βThe Spirit of Surferβs Paradise/Guy Gibson/Just Janeβ to flying condition, the availability (or not) of a mid-upper turret must be several thousand line-items down the list of things to worry about.
Personally, I’ll be surprised if it ever flies again. I’ll be very pleased if it does, but surprised.
That reminds me, RB. I bumped into some of your pals earlier and they told me they’re waiting for you over on the XH558 thread.
