Amazing as they are, none of the new “super” IR dogfight missles would seem to possess more than modest sustained kinematic performance and their threat would seem to be minimized by a combination of high speed and offset. I’ve read that the 2 F-15s that downed 2 MiG-29s in WVR combat over Bosnia in 1999 conducted their business at supersonic speed and arms length to defeat the R-73’s launch envelope as they pressed in for the kill with their AMRAAMs. I believe that weapons combining high kinematic performance with high agility like the Derby, MICA and R-Darter {coupled to an HMS or course} may be the way forward. These so-called dual range weapons might not match the pure dogfighting missles for outright agility but rarely will they lack for energy at WVR distances.
