It does get more interesting when you check the s/n of this example! 😀
83842 sold on commercial market as N1212N. Re-registered with bogus serial of N7712M and
covertly exported to new Israeli AF. Interned in Azores by Portuguese authorities
on way to Israeli air force. Passed along to Portuguese AF. Subsequent history
after impoundment in Azores is unclear–one sourse says it went to
Dominican AF as FAD 2301, another says to Portuguese AF for spares.

Your thread, your thread drift! 😀
IAF s/n Original Designation Squadron Civil Reg.
1601 B-17G-95DL 44-83753 69 Squadron (Hammer) N5024N
1602 B-17G-95DL 44-83811 69 Squadron (Hammer) N5014N
n/a B-17G-95DL 44-83842 Interned Portugal N7712M
1603 B-17G-95DL 44-83851 69 Squadron (Hammer) N1098M
These aircraft were basically civil aircraft when bought in the US and were crudely militarised when they arrived in the Czech Republic. Portugal operated five SB-17G’s for search and rescue purposes so one could guess that the appropriated Azoran example would have been used for spares.

Good Day!
Nice shot!! Plz let me know if you have a better resolution. The second sample may be #2301!! One of them is mentioned to have gone to Israel!!
Maybe not. The Israeli Air Force obtained four B.17’s which were flown from Miami to Puerto Rico, then to the Azores and the Czech Republic. The last one flown across the Atlantic was confiscated in the Azores. The three remaining aircraft took part in bombing raids and were eventually scrapped in Israel.

Never mind, I’ll just put these back in the file cabinet.
