There is nothing wrong with the Dominican Republic. It is just getting slightly crowded as more and more people want to holiday there.

For roughly the same price, try hotels in Cuba and not the Caribbean, but Mexico.

We generally get much better staff travel terms and conditions than the scheduled carriers. Companies generally have ‘interline’ agreements with other airlines so their staff can have discounted travel on each others flighs on a standby basis. A typical but good deal would be referred to as an ID90 where you get 90% off the full fare price of the ticket. The advantage of working in the charter sector is that we not only own the airline but the whole package business so as well as getting cheap flights on other airlines we get big discounts on complete holidays but these are firm rather than standby. In my outfit once a year we can book a complete package for our family and then get 50% back off. On top of that twice a year we can phone up (but only with 48 hours notice) and take a complete package (maybe even all inclusive) at any available destination (Med, Carribean, etc) for £75 per head. Up until recently it used to be £25 per head!

The annoying thing is that I have been busy doing building work on the house (I’m a bit of a jack of all trades) and raising babies for the last few years so I haven’t got round to taking up any of these offers! The other side of the coin is that when I get a week off I really enjoy NOT getting on an aeroplane! Don’t get me wrong, I love aviation but it’s a bit like eating chocolate at every meal!

I think the reason my family an I have stopped going there is because it is turning into one of these trashy Spanish islands, but hasn’t quite reached the trashy stage.

Let’s face it though, it’s not quite as bad as Ibiza and Mallorca in my opinion. Skyscraper hotels with basic facilities, miles away from the nearest, crowded beach, just don’t appeal. Hotels in the Dominican Republic are much nicer and probably about the same price, too. Many will have their own private beaches and be all-inclusive, there is really little need to leave the hotel.

In Playa Dorada, a compound of hotels, all about 500 metres from the beach, you’re safe at all times of the day. The area is protected my security guards all day, every day.

But Europe is becoming more and more expensive these days and many of the hotels I’ve come across on the continent have not been comparable to those in America, Asia and the Caribbean. The more distressing thing is that a holiday to Spain can cost as much as one to the Dominican Republic… or more.

It’s all very well to say to go to other islands like St. Lucia and Antigua, but to do this could easily cost 100% more. I think as a first taste for the Caribbean, it’s ideal. We tried it three times (1999, 2000 and 2001) and felt we’d seen all there was to see.

It’s becoming very popular, being the cheapest Caribbean Island available to tourists.

Flights from the UK are strictly limited to charters; Air 2000, Monarch Airlines, Britannia and MyTravel. But connect through Florida or New York and you should have no problem.

To go schedules to Dominican you would have to go via the US But a lot of the major cities seem to have flights to Puerto Plata
( New York ,Miami) and it is strange to see Continental 737s and AA aircraft with propelors . There is a web site www. dominican vacations(may have debbie at the front) that lists every hotel on the island with a breakdown every beach in fact its like an island a-z

Sorry too,

But i have to agree softland, i worked on a sailing boat in the caribbean a summer ago for about a month and we got to all the islands and i didnt like the Dominican Republic, plus if you wanna get away from europe and GB more specifically dontgo to the Dominican Republic, its like Mallorca almost, i recommend Antigua, St. Lucia, and The lower islands.

Sorry if i upset any of you guys with this but i think the place is a dump.Working for an airline i have spent a lot of time down here and i dont like it at all.In my opinion there are much nicer places you can go for the same price.I find in the Dominican its not safe to go out at night so its like being under house arrest you have to stay in your resort. But each to their own its not my choice but others might like it ?

Beaches…

Depends where you are going to. If you go to the North side of the island, you’ll be swimming in the Atlantic Ocean. On the South side you’ll be swimming in the Caribbean Sea.

Currency…

The Dominican Peso with 100 centavos making 1 Peso, although the US Dollar is widely accepted.

Hotels…

I think all hotels featured in UK tour operator’s brochures are all-inclusive – meaning all meals and drinks are included at any time of the day.

More about the country…

“Occupies the eastern two thirds of the island of Hispaniola in the Caribbean. Frequent coups and a strong US influence mark its recent past.”

“Heaviest rainfall in the Northeast”

“Population is 7,600,00 (7.6m)”

What exactly do you want to know? Myself and adamwri have both been there and have given various comments but you don’t seem to have acknowledged them in any way.

I’ll try to bear that in mind when I spend my one hour on the kerosene soaked ramp at Izmir at 0100 tonight!

In fact that’s the problem, I get to go and come back every day without getting the nice bit in the middle!
