Sadly died today . No doubt remembered by all who saw ‘that’ film, she played the feisty Section Officer Harvey, who took on Kenneth Moore.
Her robust Historic Aircraft credentials are further reinforced by her role co-starring with Sally-B in the 1980’s drama, We’ll Meet Again”.

BREAK!
Right… Back to Susannah York. Apparently a relation of mine was a lump under that tarpaulin. I really must find out who…

I knew Susannah York from an abandonned film project many years ago, and through my other half as in recent years she was a frequent and chatty visitor (with her dog, Oscar) to her shop.
She was a charming, warm and modest person – and as for her talent, when she was given the roles she really ran with them – watch ‘They Shoot Horses Don’t They?’ for an idea of what she was capable of with a properly written part. Sadly, her part in the BoB movie wasn’t one of those! A slightly better indication comes from her role in ‘We’ll Meet Again’.
Sorely Missed. RIP.

Sorry she’s gone, but I still find myself fast forwarding her bits of the film. I was eleven when the film first came out, she did not leave a lasting impression on me. The aeroplanes were the stars and watching a 109 flying at 20′ beating up some Hurricanes at the beginning or Spitfires taking off during a raid and one hitting a bowser or the hangar at Duxford blown up or the emotion of HeIIIs shot down without loss, the German front gunner having tomato sauce sprayed onto his goggles (it looked like blood when you’re eleven), Spitfires dancing across the silver screen knocking down the hun. It all looked so real at the time and was one of my aviation pivotal moments.
It wasn’t that I did not like SY per se, but the role she played.
If it was to be done again I would hope they would include:
instead and focus more on the Battle.
just my thoughts….(now where’s that tin hat?)
(need a bigger boat!:D…..took awhile)
I tend to agree. For many on here I think her career began with this film. BoB was about the flying for me and SY’s role in it was not particularly impressive having already seen her in Tunes of Glory, Greengage Summer, Tom Jones, A Man for All Seasons and Killing of Sister George – after the latter, BoB was pretty tame fare!!! 😉

Wasn’t half the point of the SO Harvey character, the retelling of just that story?
Her having to take responsibility for the female casualties in the aftermath of the raid? Or are you saying you’d rather have focussed on the girls about to be killed and seen the full blood-spurting Sam Peckinpah detail in slow-mo?

I’ve been watching this thread for a few days now and I have come to the conclusion that a lot of the contributers are aged between 45 and 55 the BoB film had a big impact on them and instilled an iterest in
a) vintage flying machines
b) sussies
c) BoBAs to the nature and context of whether the style or machines are correct doesn’t matter, it is and has remained one of my favourite films and Miss York along with many talented actors from the sixties enhanced my enjoyment of this film.
A fitting epitaph to the young pilots who gave there lives.
beachcomer, stop giving our ages away:mad::). – besides your only as old as you feel, which for me currently falls somewhere between 23-83 depending on exhaustion level.
Back to subject, it just goes to show that Miss York was appreciated by so many.

In May, 1996, I was in England on business… After a sleepless”red-eye” from YYZ to Heathrow, I was hauling a suitcase off an escalator in King’s Cross Underground station… and literally bumped into her.
I was so dazed, I didn’t say a thing other than a mumbled “Sorry”. 😮
The bedroom attire truly brings back memories… btw, in ’96 she was still a major “hottie” imho. 😉

Yes Susannah York’s hair was wrong. The bedroom scene wooden…. And I’m sure that her nickers were not standard WAAF issue.
But then the Hurricanes and Spitfires were not all Mk1’s and the German planes had funny engines!
As a nine year old taken to the cinema with his dad the BoB aircraft kindled an interest in aviation, and Susannah York kindled and interest in the fairer sex. I owe a lot to that film.

A short clip of her in We’ll meet again.

Really?
It looked a pretty standard bit of 1930s hotel wardrobe to me, but then I’m not bedroom furniture spotter 😀

Great wardrobe in that bedroom scene though.
By: Moggy C - 18th January 2011 at 20:50
She was not miscast. Blame the stylists not her.
Given authentic hairstyle, make-up and a slightly more distressed wardrobe she had the acting skills to carry it off, even then.
Though it must be admitted that the bedroom scene with Plummer is horribly wooden. I think that the production company was better at handling the action than the quieter bits.

They failed hopelessly as seen late in the movie where Susannah threw a salute to Kenneth More; high heels and saluting don’t go together.
She did her best in the B0B, and you can’t blame her for the miscasting.

And why does Sqn Ldr Skipper have to be so unbelievably grumpy and snarly??
He read the script? :diablo:
By: masr - 18th January 2011 at 18:56
I have to say it’s always surprised me that with all the effort made to recreate a Spitfire squadron of 1940, no-one noticed that Section Officer Harvey shared the same hair stylist as Barbara Windsor.
And why does Sqn Ldr Skipper have to be so unbelievably grumpy and snarly??
Skipper was a shining example of peaceful tolerance compared to a S/L who was my CO.
