Dornier 217 Retrieval In France

Good evening all,

I am planning to retrieve next June several parts of a KG100 Do217 which crashed in the French mountains in 1944. Its remains were thrown after the crash in a 80 meter deep cave by local people and they stayed there for 70 years (see picture attached: you can recognize the “spaghetti” camouflage). Many parts are there, waiting. This very original operation will be done by speleologists. All the authorizations have been obtained, and the parts will be afterwards exposed in different museums.

I am looking for support: logistic, financial, and also some media coverage. I shall be happy to trade off some parts against such support. If you have any idea or proposal in this respect, I shall be delighted if you contact me by PM. Looking forward to reading you.

GC

Precision: this is not a business driven venture, it is a historical operation. Parts will not be sold but can be traded off against, for example, other aviation artefacts (with a strong preference for French stuff).

I forgot to answer a question: 3 out of the four engines (Two DO217 crashed= 4 engines:)) are stored in a small local museum, therefore not in the cave;

no idea where the forth engine may be..

Anon: we don’t know exactly what is down there but it is likely to be bits and pieces. But maybe some good surprises: parts are sometimes under woods fallen there or rocks (see picture) when unearthed, we may have nice things.

Wyverfan: yes, you are somehow right, but we face a problem of space. We would need too much room to have everything on one place. So, we think it wise to share with different museums..

Best regards

As mentioned it would be interesting to know how much is left in the cave, as surely it would be better to keep and display everything together rather than ‘trade’ it off to different locations?!

Do 217

The alloy looks to be in excellent condition but the steel stuff has suffered a bit.

How much of the aircraft is down this hole, is the whole thing there or just the light stuff?

Are the engines and propellers there?

Flying pencil: sure, we’ll keep informed of the results. You make me think that some of these parts could may be used for the DO17 project, when it will be taken out of the sea (probably many parts are common between DO17 & DO217). If you have a contact with their team, I am interested.

Vacca: for sure, nice parts to be expected, but not yet enough to rebuild one ! (see attachment)

That looks like enough for a full rebuild!
