Dornier Do17 in Norwich

Sometime during the latter half of August, & the first half of September 1940 a Dornier Do 17 was put on display in Eaton Park Norwich, after being forced-down in The Valley Drive, Mousehold Heath sector of the City during the last weeks of August 1940.
The aircraft was in reasonable condition, & was jacked up onto it’s wheels, & then towed to the park for a two week public display.
Has anyone out there got any details on this aircraft, & or, the event Please?
I have a newspaper pic. of it on display, but due to wartime restrictions no details were published, & no identity of the A/C can be seen on the pic.

Any help would be greatly appreciated as no details have been forthcoming from enquiries into the Norwich & Norfolk libraries/museums.

My thanks in anticipation

Dornier Do 17

The museum were indeed as helpful as the could be, but they never had any details on this A/C. in their records. They suggested another source for possible details, but that, like all my leads so far did not bring any results. The picture of the A/C on display in Eaton Park keeps coming to light, but it seems that the details, dates etc etc. are so hard to find.
The German losses in ‘The Battle of Britain Then & Now’, for the period 10th July to Oct 31st., do not specifically list this A/C. the same applies to other sources, this is rather strange, as usually RAF, & German aircraft losses over the UK. are well covered. especially when pictures were taken at the time, even with wartime censureship, offical records were kept by police, army, local authorities. & of course by the units which recovered the A/C.
I will try the records office & Hendon museum to see what they might know on this incident.

I am suprised that you say you have had no response from the City of Norwich Aviation Museum, I found them very helpful with a question about a Hampden crash in Norwich. Actually, I am more than suprised, I’m shocked that they haven’t at least suggested someone who can be of help.

My thanks for your idea, but It definately is a Do17 — I have a picture of the actual A/C on show in the Norwich park.

It’s just a thought, but could this Do17 have actually been a Do215? There was alot of confusion at the time about the various versions of Do17, so it might be worth checking whether it was a mis-identified ‘215.

As I say, just a thought…
