I know this was discussed a while ago but as a kid I was a regular at Blackbushe. Saw all the Sea Furys, casa 352’s, C47’s, etc up to G-FORT go through the place. Questions are
1) He always had the reputation as being an arrogant t****r(and more) in the spotting community. I can very much remember the guard dogs! Was this, in your opinions, true?
2) I can’t think of any airframe currently in the uk that ows it’s existance to him( anybody correct me?). What long term impact do you think he had on thew uk preservation scene?

I used to see Pete’s sister around quite a bit, but not since her late husband tried to aviate with the control locks in place. I assume she’s still here in Calif some place.

Flying A Services, with an alleged facility at Greenham Common (Berkshire ) is said to be owned by the Arnold family. Google does not seem to know of them, but it could be a start.

If Doug’s relatives are as secretive as he was, I wish you luck!
PS. His son lives in Monaco (or did)

Please if anyone has ANY information on any of Doug’s relatives or their whereabouts I would appreciate it if you could forward me a message.
Thank you

Digby – My information came from the owner and restorer of an Indian Tempest. Do you have a stash of Indian Tempests which somehow managed
to ‘disappear’ between the AM pictures and the tender going through? Or indeed do you have the elevators which also ‘disappeared’?
I am more than happy to be ‘shot down’ – please tell us your version
of the Tempest saga .

Read the real message from BMFB.
I could well imagine Doug Arnold just letting slip that he had ‘junked’ several low grade Tempests in India. I remember the story circulating at the time. I suspect it was just part of the market strategy – “stay away from my territory”.
He was a big man, a wealthy man, he loved ‘the deal’, he liked a fight and he liked to win, be it with local planning officers, the Australian Government or fellow Warbird owners.
I well remember the sale of the auction of Spitfire BR601 at Christies in 1986. The aircraft had been erected outside one of their London sale rooms. For the majority of the viewing day he positioned himself by the trailing edge and glowered at anybody showing more than casual interest – “stay away from my territory”. They got the message and he got a cheap Spitfire.

Mr Burke I’m pretty sure youre wrong in fact I know your’e wrong sorry
Not about elevators he is not!! A well known collector (who will remain nameless) kept one set of Tempest/Tyffie elevators and trashed all the others (I had a couple of pairs at the time so could help others out). This is not folklore, sadly, several collectors did this with parts. The other thing was to find stuff and then buy it all up to keep it from others and control the market.

I spoke to various individuals involved in the import of the Indian Tempests and certainly it’s very likely that a few where disposed on on site to keep the prices
higher. Interestingly the elevators also seem to have disappeared en mass when
compared to the pictures featured in AM circa 1973.

Here’s a shot of Doug with his Spitfire XVIII, I seem to recall the Spit was going off to Hurn for the application of its paintwork.

And people let you fly their Spits? I’d have thought that was only for people with integrity.Thermal
Clearly you do not know him. May I suggest some moderation Thermal – this is no place for personal insults.

Dehra Dun side trip.
Mark,
Thanks for the interesting inputs. The Harvards, Vampires and Mysteres were phased out of the IAF around 72-73 . So tons of stuff must have been disposed off then.
I notice from the Survivors list on Chris Landbergs site that there are 7 ex IAF Tempests listed as being in the US and UK. So I wonder if the remaining four are still lying around somewhere?
That Harvard, was the one from Doon School right? so only the wings were shipped out ? what happend to the Harvard? Any pictures of that?
Jagan,
Well I had to dig pretty deep to find the neg of this one. It has never been printed. FT105, The Doon School, Dehra Dun, 29 Feb 1976.
Although Doug Arnold assured me at the time that the outer wings standing to rear were Harvard, I suggested and it was confirmed that they were in fact Hurricane. Also within the wire meshed ‘carport’ was the reduction gear, propeller and nose cone of the self same Hurricane. Well who was a lucky boy then?
It does beg the question – did they scrap off a Hurricane fuselage and centre section with attendant Harvard outer wings? 🙂

Here’s one for you from Aesop’s fables.
The gnat and the bull (don’t over-estimate your own importance)
A gnat settled on a bull’s horn. After a while the gnat asked the bull, “Do you mind if I go now?” The bull replied, unconcerned, “It’s all the same to me: I didn’t notice you when you came, and I won’t notice when you’ve gone.”
Nice quote dear chap, good user name as well is that because you are full of hot air or the stuff that comes out of your bull you seem so fond of 🙂
