Hi folks; Read on the ‘other’ forum that the national naval
aviation museum will recover a Dauntless April 24,does this
mean the TBD in Lake Ontario can be got? Does this
new view also go for USN ac on land? How about the
A-J savage on a hilltop in antartica or RD4s on CDN
soil?

clarification
The TBD location was from memory i believe i saw it
on 60 miniutes years ago sorry i’m not perfect, the shot
i remember was in shallow enough water it was easily
seen by sunlight at the bottom. So if anyone knows
the one please enlighten me.The SBD the wix site
stated its being recovered from Lake Michigan. As for
our laws and agreements i can always cheerfully learn
more for if i ever win 649 i can recover something.
It is nice the states got a new director that will help.
A dumb question might get a right answer.Sorry for any
confustion guys.my bad.:(

I think we are at cross purposes here…
The title for the Thread was Devastator but detail mentioned a Dauntless!
Classic Wings does say about Devastor but I assume it is the Miami one….

The situation regarding the recovery of lost US Navy aircraft has finally changed (for the better) following the appointment of a new director.
That’s good news, the old dog in the manger attitude was not very helpful for preservation – these wrecks are not getting any younger.
On the subject of Devastators there is one in the waters of a Pacific atoll whose name escapes me. It is however pretty encrusted and damaged – conservation might be very difficult.

I remember twin engines did they have P2’s down there?
Yes. There were some ski-equipped Neptunes used for survey work.

So far they have shown some reluctance in this area. 🙂

I’ve seen the final disposition list for the entire production run of 129 TBD-1s and none of them are recorded as having been lost in the Great Lakes. Do you have a source for the information that there is a Devastator wreck in Lake Ontario?

In the case of US aircraft wrecks on Canadian land, there is a bi-lateral agreement between the two counties that would allow Ottawa to grant title to someone interested in salvaging it if the proper conditions for that aircraft and area were met. If the Aircraft came to rest in Canadian water, I’m sure you could use that to help out.
