The Boeing 747 had been in service for 1 year when Mcdonnell-Douglas rolled out their new ‘jumbo-jet’ competitor type, the DC-10. The series -30 was the best seller variant and was the version that competed with the 747 on long-haul routes, While the series 10 was found to be ideal for many routes within the USA.
The DC-10 lost much of its market during its early airline years after a THY DC10 suffered catastrophic cabin decompression over Paris when a rear cargo door came open causing the cabin floor to fail. The visual lock checking system was improved after this. A second disaster happened in the USA when a DC10 (United?) literally lost a wing engine on takeoff and rolled inverted and dived into the ground. It was found that engineers had been using fork-lift trucks to install engines after maintenance which had over stressed the wing bolts. A third disaster happened when a United DC10 lost the fin-engine after a compressor failure taking out all hydraulic systems. The pilots managed to control the jet by assymetric engine power alone but the aircraft crashed on landing.

I think I read somewhere that Singapore Airlines flew DC-10s?
Any pics of SIA DC-10s?

Love those classic airline liveries HP81! Especially the Mexicana markings.

The DC10 is one of my favourite airliners, both to fly in & maintain.
I have crossed the Atlantic in DC10, Tristar, 747, 767, 777, 707F & MD11F & the best flights were in DC10’s. The only passenger flight that I have had that matched the DC10 for quietness was a tourist configured upper deck on a 747-300. I should say that probably the worst flight I have had as a passenger was in a very badly maintained & over crowded cabin of a DC10.

Am I alone? or does anyone else think that that Laker livery is timeless, and would still look at home on a crowded apron today. When you think that this very same livery adorned his Britannia 102 aircraft all those years ago. God rest him.
No, it’s great. I flew NY for £99 with Freddie. Then Greyhound bus non-stop (72 hours…well it stopped to change drivers get fuel etc.) to LA.

I always thought that the DC10 really looked the business compared to the Tristar. Flew on a BCAL 10, many moons ago.
100% the opposite for me. The Tristar looked very elegant IMO. That 3rd lump on the 10 always looked like it was a design afterthought on a Friday afternoon.

Jumbo Jet
Flying Tigers apparently hi-jacked the name.Jumbo Jet’ and painted it on their new stretched DC-8-63 freighters back in 1968 (but abandoned the name when the 747 arrived)…here’s a contemporary pic

Peter, Love the Condor DC-10 photo. A very good selection, guys. 🙂
Longshot, those two DC-10s were also used into Heathrow in the second half of the 1970s prior to 747s being introduced. 🙂
