Douglas DC-2 "Hanssin Jukka" to be restored

Yle.fi – Ilmavoimien ensimmäinen kuljetuskone entisöidään. (in Finnish)

Finnish Air Force’s first cargo aeroplane, DC-2-115E “Hanssin Jukka” (c/n 1354, ex. PH-AKH, SE-AKE), is to be restored within next eighteen months to the scheme it was in June 1944. Carl Gustaf von Rosen bought the plane from KLM and donated it to FiAF during the Winter War. It was in use until 1955.

1. Are the bomb-racks installed?

Hanssin-Jukka is restored to the state it was in 1944, i.e. without the bomb racks and the turret used only during Winter War.

2. What about the mid-upper gun cockpit?

See above.

3. Is the Brewster still in Finland, or have the Americans taken her back to Pensacola?

We exhibit also Brewster Model 239 (BW-372), which is on loan from National Naval Aviation Museum, Pensacola, until July 2012.

It’s wonderful to see such an important veteran of the Ilmavoimat’s epic struggle against the Stalinist hordes back to her former glory! The Hakkaristi, the dark green & black, truly show her as she was in those dark days.

Keski-Suomen is one of the museums I’ve always wanted to visit. Now there’s yet one more major attraction to see, there.

Martti, I have three questions:

1. Are the bomb-racks installed?

2. What about the mid-upper gun cockpit?

2. Is the Brewster still in Finland, or have the Americans taken her back to Pensacola?

Latest news is that major parts from another DC-2, “Pikku-Lassi”, are going to be stripped and used to in the restoration of “Hanssin Jukka”.

I hope they re-plumb the fuel system…otherwise it might turn into a glider at an inopportune moment….

I just wanted to inform you of the blog that the guys behind the projects are running. It’s in Finnish but as usual I’m happy to provide a translation if needed. At the meantime you can enjoy the photographs! 😉

If still there rotting away any idea who owns it?

The photo on the link was taken during an expedition weekend where some of the planes were taken outside for the public to see them. The plane is part of “Päijänne Tavastia Aviation Museum” but all ex-Finnish Air Force objects are own by Military Museum of Finland and are merely leased to various museum.

Anyone know the story behind that great hole in the rear fuselage?

Yes, after being wfu the airplane served as a cafeteria for about 20 years. The hole is under the gent’s, result of bad aiming by the customers…:o

I’d not call it the first CARGO airplane, rather the first transport airplane of the FiAF…

Edit: and obviously this means: the first twin-engine transport etc….
