All the talk about old TV series, and happily co-insiding with my new job, had reminded me of an old MOD training video ‘Dr Fod and the Wayward Body’. The old flight safety videos we were subjected to at Halton, Cosford, Swinderby, etc were brilliantly appalling and as such have been imprinted on the minds of every RAF engineer. Apart from buying the original from the MOD (£70 !!! for a ten minute video), where can I lay my hands on a copy? Does anyone have a copy of this film?
I have seen the ‘Man from Lox’ vid on Youtube
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q9sIT6P_05I
which is along the same lines, but with less cleavage – another classic though.
Future civillian airline mechanic students need to see this stuff, mainly because it will stick in their minds and FOD will become part of their vocabulary instantly. (and it spices up a thoroughly dull lesson…)
If you are willing to supply a copy (cash waiting), please PM me..
Remember any other flight safety classics? Please feel free to discuss them here….:D
Thanks in advance.

no sign of Dr. Fod yet. I managed to get a copy, but the original tape must have been quite badly damaged as the digital copy was nasty. Not something you could use…….

was that the ‘human factors’ one? stressed pilot, late take off, big smoking hole in the ground? I only vaguely remember it. I think it was supposed to be set in Germany…. I THINK…
Pretty sure it was Belize. I think (and that is something for someone as hard of thinking as me) that the fat taxi driver in Eastenders played the part of the Line Chief.
Anyway.Whole chain of events leading up to O’Sullivan forgetting to pull the seat pins. ground troops in contact, off he goes in for Close Air Support, scares some birds in the jungle canopy which stuff themselves down the intake, engine stops and no way for the man to get out.
I thought the Hawk one was at shot at St Athan. It was the only one I could show which would get trainees to stay awake. that is until I had a predominantly female course!

I love these old-fashioned films, many of them are simple, direct, and memorable. Many of them are a little corny and dramatic, but I think that helps get the attention of some people’s personalities.
I’ve never been in the Navy, but I have seen a clip of it in the Air Force. I posted the short clip that’s in very bad condition on my page before I realized there was a longer and better version already posted there. Oh well.
Similar military safety films.
See if these safety videos bring back some memories, if not it might be educational.

Yup, rememberthat one. I’ve often wondered if they were available to the general public.

dr Fod et al was alot more memorable mainly due to the helpful ladys….

What about Richard O’Sullivan as a Harrier pilot, does that ring a bell with anyone?
With the Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart out of Dr Who in it as well (Nicholas Courtney), In fact I think Courtney did a couple of Flight Safety films as a kind of Wg Cdr Spry.

i can still remember vividly remember when DR FOD and miss Wayward body came to Valley to do a shoot for flight safety posters in the early 80’s….you can imagine the reaction when a rather fit miss wayward body walked through the line hut clad only in a basque and stockings, and then proceeded to pose all over a hawk! its the only time i’ve ever seen a FLM ask the controller for a job!

Aaaaah …Dr FOD etc etc
Remember this being one of the many Flight Safety films we sat through whilst I was on UAS.
If I remember correctly Dr FOD was played by the chap who was Catweazle in the TV series – Geoffrey Bayldon – and it had a terrifically 70’s view of politically correct attire for the young ladies!

I know some of the Royal Navy/FAA instructional stuff has been released on DVD by the Imperial War Museum. Some excellent aircraft footage on those.

Aah, the good old films. I remember them well.
If you do find them do drop me a line as I would be interested in them too.
I’m also looking for a copy of “Blue spear, the movie” shot at Marham in ’86.
Cheers,
Rob
