blitz episode screened on saturday 17 april
i’m not an expert on WAAF ranks – but i’m fairly sure that LANCE CORPORAL – with one chevron – was not used ??
GOOD CONDUCT chevrons WERE worn – but not like this ??
considering the care with general historical detail in this particular episode i’m interested in the observations of other members .
with the screening of channel 4 BLITZ STREET tonight it may be worthwhile checking on the minor details !!!!

…a kind of anti gravity bubble…..that the spitfires were able to fly. I did wonder how long the oxygen would have lasted with the merlin using it up?
It wouldn’t matter anyway; Spitfires can’t propel themselves if they are in an atmosphere sealed in a ‘gravity bubble’. 😀

Speaking as an even longer ex TG9. I never saluted an officer when he/she was out of uniform!!!
A young WRAF at RAF St Mawgan walking up the hill to work one morning, failed to salute the C.O. driving down the hill in his flag flying staff car.
Incensed with the lack of respect he swung round in one of the lower car parks, sped back up the hill and pulled up next to the young lady.
As he leaned across to wind down window, our WRAF opened the back passenger door, hopped in and said cheerfully “Thankyou sir, going as far as Operations?”
Being the gentleman he was, he got his salute after he dropped her off at Ops.:)
(she was TG9!)

Tom Baker was the one with the long scarf…

Watched it last night and now puzzled over the method of propulsion in an environment with zero atmosphere and while on the subject is the olive drab colour on the Daleks correct for the period, looked just a tiny shade too dark but it could have been the studio lighting.
I am sure that the scientist character was encouraged to use his Dalek knowledge and came up with a kind of anti gravity bubbles. It was in these bubbles that the spitfires were able to fly.
I did wonder how long the oxygen would have lasted with the merlin using it up? I thought the did fire bullets not lasers.
I was dissapointed that they didnt use the upgrade of the daleks to get rid of the sink plunger and replace it with at least a mechanical arm.
His new assistant could be the new Sarah Jane who was extremely sexy without resorting to being scantily clad. Well I thought so anyway.
Finally I prefered the old style doctors like Ton Baker , Jon Pertwee and the one who wore the blazers oh and the one who had the long scarfs as a trademark. I liked the brigadeer too.
Sorry I was only going to write couple of lines and got carried away.

Speaking as a WO with 33 years service – if I caught you lot not saluting an officer who was known to you whilst he was wearing civvies (as per Queen’s Regulations), bearing in mind you are saluting the Queen’s commission and not the individual, you would all be on the square doing drill right now with a bucketload of extra duties to do in what WAS your time off! Now double away you lot – and remember I’ve got my eye on you!:diablo::diablo::diablo::diablo:
Nice one Tom:dev2::dev2::dev2::dev2:

dr who gaffe ….
having started this thread yesterday i hadn’t expected such a wide range of responses !
i must say i tend to agree with BSG-75 – that it certainly wasn’t one of the better efforts in the dr who series . there was too much of exchange of glances and running around . one of the few episodes i wasn’t sad to see the end of ! the potential was there for a good episode – i liked the idea of mixing fact/fantasy of the scientist and his ironsides – and his non-human gubbins .
my thoughts on the WAAF uniform gaffe still remain tho – many other details of uniforms were accurate – there was no need anyway to put the single chevron on the girl’s tunic sleeve !!!
little points like that make the element of fantasy (spitfires in space / daleks / robot scientist etc) more difficult to achieve successfully .

And I suppose the Jankers would apply equally if we were to salute you as a WO too?! :diablo:;)

Given that the “timeline” was broken (whats her face, the red head wearing the greyhound skirt wasn’t aware of the Daleks) I guess you could use that as a blanket excuse for all such errors/discrepancies. At the end of the day, its a bit of fantasy. The BBC are pushed for budget, Dr Who is a balance on that (loads of merchandise and I am I the only one who thinks, new Daleks, equals new toys, equals more revenue ?). Think about how many times David Tennant was running around Cardiff (London) solving mysteries saving money on effects and locations.
As a “watcher” and not really a fan, it wasn’t one of the better episodes, then again it had millions of viewers, the BBC will take a slice from toy sales, job done (as far as they are concerned)

“…..they are doing their best to get things right although the finance doesnt allow for total accuracy in all things.”
That just about sums up the BBC. They are unable to cut their cloth. They have the billions to make wonderful, well written, well acted, well designed drama but they waste resources on rubbish. They could do it if they changed their philosophy.

precursor to the JT had one Chevron but inverted, the ****e hawks are the wrong colour too, should be the light coloured background and the uniforms wrong as well…..

Speaking as an ex TG9, I can assure you that you are required to salute an officer, in or or out of uniform (oooer matron), wearing a hat or not.
Pendantic mode off

In the old days when vintage aircraft were required for filming in most cases the production had to make do with whatever was available, Harvards for Spitfires, that sort of thing, but with CGI today you can reproduce anything very realistically so its annoying when they make mistakes like this with Mk IX Spits in gray / green camouflage when they should be earlier models.
Yes I know its fantasy, but they made a big deal about the authenticity of the cabinet war room set so they dont really have an excuse.
As for the new “Dulux Daleks”…… well, if it ‘aint broke, dont fix it.:(
To be fair it was only DW which is totally fantasy it doesnt claim to be factual in any way and not to mention the BBC are pretty pressed for cash, We are working on another project at the moment and they are doing their best to get things right although the finance doesnt allow for total accuracy in all things. CGI works well from a distance but does not work well for close ups or changing paint schemes. BBC simply dont have the resources of Hollywood, whats their excuse?
