A Defence board of inquiry has been shown dramatic video of an Australian Black Hawk helicopter crash near Fiji last year.
The video is the first time the public has seen what actually happened last November.

Caught by on-board cameras, the Black Hawk comes in to land, seemingly too fast.

It crashes onto the flight deck severing the tail rotor and sending the chopper tumbling over the side.

Further video shows frantic rescue efforts and the subsequent salvage operation.

The video was released despite the Australian Defence Force’s attempt to suppress it, along with the name of Black Hawk crewmen.

Today’s hearing was packed with friends and family of the men who died, including SAS Trooper Joshua Porter’s wife Carinna.

Her baby Madison was born last month.

They heard Counsel Assisting the inquiry tell of a landing exercise described as “high risk”.

“The flight should not have been authorised,” he said.

“Specifically, changes should have been made to the brief to allow for the wind.”
