Different sources give the location of these two photographs as, either, Drem or Andrews Field. There is a line of hills in the background which I think anyone familar with the correct location would easily recognise.
So, please, is it Drem or Andrews Field?

309 Squadron joined 133 Wing, replacing 129 Squadron, 12th December 1944 at Andrews Field which is probably why some people are (erroneously) captioning the photographs as Andrews Field.

Other photos taken at the same time show 309 Polish Sqn at Drem, December 1944. Here’s a Google map capture from roughly the same location today…

Are Drem and East Fortune the same aerodrome?
Regards
No, but they are, or were, next to each other.

Thanks. I thought Drem the most likely location but not being familiar with the location I could not be 100% sure.

Agreed – I’ve never been to Drem but if those hills are at Andrewsfield I’m a Dutchman.

Hi Moggy;
The airfield had it’s name changed to Andrewsfield on 21st May 1943 in memory of General Frank M Andrews. It seems that it was the only named USAAF station in the UK. To be honest though, during my time at the Rebel Air Museum, I heard both names used in relation to the airfield, but Andrewsfield was the most common.
Regards;
Steve

Not Andrewsfield – Though wasn’t it known as Great Saling then?

Well, having spent a number of years at Andrewsfield and having been to Drem a few times, I’d say Drem. Those hills in the background look a little out of place for the Essex countryside.
