I’m flying through DUB next Wednesday and the Wednesday after, so hopefully whatever problems they’re having won’t reappear on those days!

I was unfortunate to get caught up with a similar (if not the same) problem back in the beginning of June. As PMN will recollect, the delay meant he had to wait a further hour until he could consume something alcoholic – The IAA were not in his good books that day!!!!!

It happened to UK airspace when they brought in the current system a number of years ago. The entire airspace was shut down for at least 5 hours and it happened 3 times before it was fixed its not that unusual.

I find it ridiculous that a main airport of a country, the airport of the capital of Ireland faces problems such as these which would be expected of smaller airports. Imagine if Heathrow, De Gaulle or Amsterdam were faced with this. I know its not the same, but even so, it puts a bad reputation on Irish air travel.

It’s getting beyond the joke at this stage,if anybody caught RTE news at six,the Irish Aviation Authority spokes person nearly had the news reader falling asleep with his awful dyre tone of voice,and mentioning terms that the regular viewer wouldnt understand-CAT 2 means nothing to them,most probably wondered why he was talking about something furry with four legs!

I should’nt worry too much Lucas, this is just a one off technical problem, sort of thing that is fixed quickly. You’ll find DUB is business as usual by the morning and will be fine on tuesday (severe bad luck excepted of course!!)

Its been happening since the start of June it started off when they tried to switch a LAN locally and apparently we were told there was a slight difference in the hardware which cause a conflict and then there was a separate power surge. It result in a computer failure and a fall back to the support computer.

This was evident by a large box appearing on the Radar screen showing the system was in reduced mode.

Basically what is happening is we are being locked out of the computer which handle flight data processing and we lose coupling of the aircraft symbols with there flight plans as a result we only see the Squawk code and cannot tell who it is etc. There is also limit interaction allowed with the system.

It happened today for about an hour. There was a ground stop put on departures and no more aircraft were allowed into the system.

There have been problems with the radar for the past month or more, with slots being dished out left, right and centre at times.

The same thing happened last week at the same airport, delaying flights for hours.

I’m due to fly to Karlsruhe on Friday from Dublin. Hope it’s sorted out by then. I wonder will there be many stranded passengers still lurking about waiting for flights?
