Wow I see a very personal connection then. Was Johnny C affected badly by the incident with Dudley? I’ll certainly try and find a copy of the squadron history, it seems a must for further research.

I knew John C o c k very well with whom Dudley Jay collided.

It would be worth your while trying to get hold of the 87 Squadron history by Perry Adams, published by Air Research Publications some years ago. The Aviation Bookshop at Tunbridge Wells can probably help you with a copy.

Dudley trevor Jay 87 squadron

Hi Paul,
Attached is a photograph of Dudley Jay taken in 1940.
To the best of my knowledge Alex Thom is the only surviving Battle of Britain member of 87 Squadron, however I’m sure someone will correct me if I’m wrong.
Good luck in your endeavours
Gerry

Hello there Everyone,

I’m currently following in Pilot Officer Dudley Trevor Jay’s footsteps, being the only person in my family I know of to be deeply involved with flying and the RAF, since P/O Jay was in the Battle of Britain. My Grandad told me once of Dudley coming to visit him in Manchester in his RAF uniform around the start of the war and really thats as far as the information on Dudley goes in my family, since my Grandad’s death a good 7 years ago now. Since being a member of the Air Training Corps and now an Officer Cadet in the University of Wales Air Squadron my interest in Dudley Jay has deepened. As such I am trying to find out any personal accounts of him, not just the official accounts. Has anyone any idea where I could get in contact with the people that fought with him and knew him in 87 Sqn? This would truly be facinating information and invaluable for my family and I. Moreover I am trying to find any pictures of him to put a face to the name everyone in my family spoke so highly of.

Thank you so much for your time.

Officer Cadet Paul Jay

No chance of even mentioning poor old Johnny asterisks name, then? A sad state of affairs when you cannot even post here the full name of a Battle of France and Battle of Britain veteran, ace, and DFC winner because his name offends. Did I mention he had a dog called Nigger?:diablo:

As a matter of fact, Johnny **** had problems with his fuel ****. No, I’m not being flippant or trying to be funny. Thats a fact. If there is anyone out there, **** is a standard word in the OED. It isn’t a rude word, but perhaps someone imagines we are all schoolboys sniggering helplessly at the word. What a shame that we cannot even mention the name of One of The Few. He was: John ****, an Australian. OK, OK, I know there has to be checks and balances. But…..really! So, here is a challenge to the Mods: put the name back in this thread. Please? If not, then Key and the Webbie should go hang their heads in shame. What was it “the Few” fought and died for….ah yes….I remember. Wasn’t one of the things freedom of speech?
Ah well….in the meantime I have just blue-pencilled his name out of my reference books that mention him, torn out the relevant page of the Air Force List for 1940 and cut out the offending biographical notes in “Men of The Battle of Britain”:D

He ran into the tail of John ****’s Hurricane when **** experienced engine problems. Johnny **** got down OK, landing at Exeter with a chewed up tail, but Jay lost his prop blades and baled out at 1,800ft. He hit the tailplane and fell dead at Ashcombe. I met Johnny **** several times and he always felt terrible about the loss of his friend, Jay. The fortunes of war…

I am currently looking for Sqt Wait’s Hurricane, which is proving very elusive,
