Can anyone tell me when this occurred?
From memory early 1970’s. I remember a Zlin, Turbulents tied together, G-ACDC, a Mosquito displaying over head. Star burst Stampe’s.
The reason that I ask, is that as a young lad this was one of the defining moments of my life (and subsequent career). A visit to Luton airport in July 1969 and the Tiger Club display a few years later set the scene for my life long association with aviation.
Any photo’s would be exceptionally nostalgic for me.
Dunstable Downs was the best venue for an air display. An amplitheatre and looking down on the Mossie….I can see it now. I think from the tannoy, it was on its way to Hatfield, either to land, or display?
Never be allowed today, this type of ‘open’ display in front of the curvature of the Chiltern hills.

I know this may sound silly, but the earliest memory that I have is seeing yellow biplanes taking off from Redhill Airfield. Redhill is my home town and my parents had a house at South Nuffield (I think) and from which countless walks in the countryside originated from.
As Redhill was home to the Tiger Club then, I suppose this had to be G-ASHS or G-ATKC. Years later, I had my first Tiger Moth flight in G-ANMV out of Redhill to Booker…….but then and now still remember yellow biplanes!

Try a search using the word “Dunstable” on the British Pathe website: www.britishpathe.com
You can preview footage of the “Vintage Air Show” which took place on 29/8/1967 – Gunbus and all!
Some nice vintage gliding footage on associated links too.
Not from Dunstable, rather A couple of Blue Max’s archive shots from Sywell. But these pics sum up the old Tiger Club/Barnstormers displays perfectly!

I dont remember any displays in the 70’s. But i was doing my thatching apprenticeship then. But there where displays in the 60’s. I rember the gunbus breaking its undercarrage strut. Spitfire and pawnee and others racing around the downs. The Montgolfier hot air balloon and the one made by a school stuck together with sellotape. There is a video of some of this done by Ted Hull at the gliding club.
On another thing the Minimoa may fly this weekend, following its 20 year restoation.
