Dutch radio-news item regarding a lancaster

Ok, so I listen to a Dutch Rock music radio station (Arrow Rock Radio-675 mt on AM) Several times today I have heard references to ‘bomber’ and Lancaster in a news story. Not understanding Dutch whatsoever, have they found another one in the ground? or is it related to an older story/event?.
Waiting for someone from Holland with good intel 🙂

Tenthije,
The NRC Handelsblad also covered this item.
As I understand the article, the aircraft crashed/ was shot down en route to target and came down in very soft ground, hence no explosion. It is believed it was carrying a ‘Tallboy’ bomb.
The stated purpose of the excavation is to recover the bodies of the remaining aircrew, not the weapon. (I would have thought it a responsibility to the community to remove known unexploded ordinance. It certainly pleased me when the unexploded bombs left by the RAF were removed/destroyed at Schiphol a few years ago).

Many thanks for the info.

Very interesting and as usual great to see the active investigation by the Dutch of WW2 sites.

Hopefully four more ” missing ” will find a final rest.

Yeah must be the same. Wierden (the salvage site) is in the Deventerwaard.

Possible information

Recently heard something via the 9 Squadron Association, about one of their Lancasters that was about to be recovered in Holland.

I believe that the aircraft was LL914, WS- U [Uncle], which crashed 23/24 September, 1944. It might have been on a Tallboy Op.

I believe there has been other coverage in the Dutch press [see link below]. Could this be the same project?

Thank you tenthije, can you keep us up to date on what is found please? 🙂

If I hear something I’ll let you know. But had you not mentioned it, I would have completely missed this salvage operation. No other media have been reporting it. Heck, finding the Telegraaf article took me an hour. The Telegraaf is usually my last ditch attempt since they are not that good a paper (think “The Sun” without page 3 girls ;)).

Dutch only:
http://www.telegraaf.nl/binnenland/50870751/Berging_vliegtuigwrak_Wierden_begonnen.html

Salvage of planewreck Wierden started.
WIERDEN – In the country side of Wierden the salvage of a British bombar from ww2 was started. The Lancaster was shot down in 1944, carrying a crew of seven.

The remains are approximately 50cm below ground. “We will excavate an area of 35 by 35 metres, layer by layer”, said salvage officer Paul Petersen.

Four bodies where never recovered. It is not known if there are any bombs in the wreck. If ammunition where to be found, then roughly 100 people may have to be temporarily evacuated.

It does not say in the article if this is a new find. I am not really up-to-date on historic aviation, am more into airliners myself. Maybe someone else can give an update on that?

This is the only source I can find. I had hoped to find a more reputable source then De Telegraaf, but nothing to be found anywhere!
