Hi all
Had a brief look in the latest “Foul Pest” (as someone (JDK?) described it recently) and there was a D-Day liveried Spitfire being taken to a Dutch museum, which I took to be a replica, but aparently it’s made up of original parts.
Which one is it and, as usual, is there a pic?

Hadn’t seen Flypast yet when I typed that previous message. I stand corrected……….
Haven’t been able to find a photo of the replica at Lelystad yet, it is visible in this shot, but only just: http://www.aviation-top-pics.com/images/194-9450_IMG.JPG
Many photos of the Aviodrome on this site: Aviation-top-pics

Hasn’t this one been in the museum at Seppe? They also have the remains of 109 that came down at Schiphol.

Nope, pretty sure it wasn’t that long ago.
Nevermind, I’ll have a sleep on it, maybe it’ll come to me then! 😀

Another shot I took of it was in FlyPast some 11 months ago. It arrived on the 8th of March 2003, so I’ll guess it was in the May FP of last year. BW Roger

Yeah it’s on the ‘Ops Board’, but I’m puzzled as to where I saw the other version!

I mailed the the ESSO shot as a joke, so I hope it is in the “OPS” section. BW Roger

I think I’ve seen two other pics of it – the ESSO one, and another of it on the trailer.

There are more original parts in the machine, and in the future replica parts will be replaced by original ones. Is the pic showing the machine at an ESSO tankstation, or is it seen in the museum with its prop turning in high speed? Hope it didn’t turn up in the news pages, it was intended for the OPS “funny pages pic” BW Roger

Cees,
Thank you for enlightening us on that.
It has probably already been enrolled on some of the Spitfire ‘survivor lists’ that have proliferated on the net. 😉
An ill-advised caption if I may say so, but a damn fine effort all the same.

Mark,
I have seen it up close rjust after it had arrived at Lisserbroek. It is a very nice looking replica using aluminium with pop rivets throughout.
There are some original parts used such as instruments, a seat and two propeller blades (5% original?). I was told by the builder Mr Willem Sieben that he used to have an original Spitfire elevator but he sold it on again but don’t think any original ones were used on his reconstruction which by the way was based on a three view drawing he got from a book initially and it was built in his garage. Although some of the proportions are suspect from certain angles, this is a magnificent achievement, and the museum attracted more visitors than they would have before the Spit arrived. Such is the charisma of Mitchell’s finest.
Hope this helps
Cees

Replica Spitfire?
Latest ‘Flypaper’ shows the ‘unit’ in transit to Lisserbroek.
The caption says:-
‘EP947’… The Spitfire, which has been assembled from original parts donated by several different machines along with new built components.
Intriguingly this could be anything from ‘95% original parts’ to ‘a rear view mirror, an ASI and the rest GRP’.
Please tell us more RogerS.

The only Spitfire ‘movement’ in The Netherlands recently has been at the Aviodrome museum in Lelystad. They took delivery of a D-Day striped replica (as far as I know) a few weeks ago.
There should be some photos around, but I cannot remember the website right now, searching……….
