Duxford – 1998

Or to be more precise 16th June 1998 and, for me at the time, a rare midweek visit to Duxford as the MATS Lockheed L-749A Constellation and the ‘Spirit of Freedom’ Douglas C-54 were spending a few days on the ground during their tour of Europe. A DC-3 in RAF Transport Command colours added to the Berlin Airlift tableau. The Dash-7 and Twin Otter of the British Antarctic Survey were also in residence along with 4 Hunters and an all red German registered Sea Fury.

Scanned from Konica VX100 35mm film.

Correct, the Iraqi Fury did go to South Africa. The Hunters were purchased by the OFMC for what was rumoured to be a 4-jet formation team but the sponsor wasn’t keen on a “military” jet being used. I believe the airframes are/were at Scampton for a while possibly due to the Hanna RAF connections.
Shame that the Connie is now grounded in a museum in Korea (?). Excellent photos though.

Great pics, Brian.

What happened to the Sea Fury? Wasn’t it sold overseas?

Nice pics, for me, it was pre-internet and I didn’t have access to sites like this that would have warned of such happenings, so despite just living down the road, I never witnessed it.
Interesting to note the number of Hunters about that always seemed to be a feature of Duxford in the 90’s, pity they’ve gone, was it something to do with the demise of the late, great Mark Hannah.

I thought Kermit sold it on last year and it left its Norfolk store and headed to Australia.
