Duxford 2002 Airshow

Duxford 2002 is on this weekend, with quite a varied participants list. Details are up on Ben Rogers’ excellent Duxford Times site at http://www.duxford.org

However, there’s one particular paragraph which I’m sure will stir some livley debate….

>There is a far more focus on making this a family airshow this year >with free admission for children (under 16) and a range of fun, free >activities will be on offer in the Family Activity Marquee, which >include:
>
>Face Painting
>Punch & Judy and Magic Shows
>Puppet Shows and Puppet Craft Sessions
>Body Art
>Paper Modelling (Bird Masks & Origami Aeroplanes)

So, will this be seen as a bold initiative, aimed at developing a new generation of airshow goers? Or will it be further evidence of the true enthusiast being alienated in favour of the masses?

Discuss….

RE: Duxford 2002 Airshow

Sadly, I’m going to miss yet another Duxford show, as i missed Old Warden last weekend. The line up looks pretty good to me, nice to see the F86 on the list, not a major disaster with the Lanc missing as she does get around quite a bit and after all the BBMF Dak is always overshadowed, so good to see her i the limelight for change.
I hope its a great show blessed with good weather, and i have to say as a parent of two young children its good to see the wider family being thought of, especially as Duxford caters for the enthusiast in Legends.
I will DEFINITELY be going to Yeovilton !!.

You’re right Ashley,it’s a shame the Firefly won’t be there, but one other regular that it seems won’t be there is the BBMF Lanc 🙁 Is this a typo or will she really not be attending? It would be nice to see her display at Duxford again after the short show she gave on the Saturaday at Legends.I’ve barely seen her all year! 🙁

RE: Duxford 2002 Airshow

The body art got me too!! Sometimes its better not to ask!!

But seriously, I have a 6yr old and a 4yr old, and they love going to the “airplane museum” as they call it, here in Ottawa (Canada Aviation Museum to the big people!) They have lots of good activities there for the younger set, including crafts, and chances to get a little closer to the aircraft than normal, and sometimes meet the people who really flew them. It does help make the statics come alive for children.

But once a year, when there are flight displays at the museum, I make sure my guys are on the flight line, not at the craft table. And they don’t seem to mind one bit.

Children are, afterall, warbirds enthusiasts in the making. They gotta start somewhere.

I think its great to see Duxford trying this approach. I just hope there is space along the fence for the kids once the flying starts.

RE: Duxford 2002 Airshow

Hmmmm…I think I’d prefer it if the activities were a little more aviation themed i.e. encouraging the kids to become interested in aircraft or military history…

I should imagine that Haydn would rather be taking a peek inside an aircraft than sat watching a Punch and Judy show though 😉

Still, I will be especially pleased to see the Swordfish as the RNHF’s examples have been absent for a few airshows now…

But no Firefly? Grrrrrrrrrr….I know we can’t have all our favourite aircraft at every show but still…:(
