Duxford 2008 – line up, participants ???

Now 2 weeks to the next Legends – and looking very much forward to it – I want to know what I can expect to see. Can anyone help about information on what we will see this year?

dont get me wrong here its just a thought ive had and theres so many types i wanna see and here i.e vulcan, swordfish, sea fury to name but a few

I spose being very young it was great going to airshows i loved it but now ive got older and done some work with warbirds its lost its silver lining abit but its great seeing something like the vulcan flying or a newly restored type being flown its magical

I dont want to take the thread off course or get into a massive argument here just my thoughts at the moment

maybe its theres to much press and i know whats going to happern and what is going to be there. If i wasnt tempted to look at lists and forums and just turn up id get a plesant supprise.
If i hadnt of seen this or other websites i wouldnt of known about LB comming and would have had a grin on my face now ive seen pics of her at duxford and it spoils it personaly

I know most will think im talking out of my @rse but its just my feeling

Sally B Engine

In the latest Sally B newsletter that I received on Friday, Elly says that flying at Legends “might be a little optimistic” although this could change if the engine they sent to the US comes back this week.

These things take time understandably and I’m sure we’d all rather see Sally back in the air for years to come rather her than rush her into Legends, sad though it’ll be not to see her with Pink Lady and Liberty Belle, especially after all the hard work that’s gone into getting these 2 here.

Good luck with the engine I say, and looking forward to what promises to be a stunning Legends!

On another forum i saw a comment along these lines

At FL they try and get a mass of aircraft and usualy ones you normally see at duxford therefore i shall be going to riat where they try and get as many different types that you dont see often or wont see again

Im not saying i agree or disagree with this i just thought iot would be good to see your comments.

I must admit for it being the 90th anniversary of the raf i would of expected to see abit more in the way of raf besides spitfires.

After looking at lists i would be more tempted to go to RIAT now but i doubt i shall be going to any this year as nothing really wants me to get up and go and pay ?50+ quid for things ive seen before an normally see

1 different aircraft doesnt do it for me

and on another note mr teichmans bonanza is going to riat, id like to know why as hes taking hes spit haha

TFC Glad and Spit have had engine runs but no test flight yet, but there is still 6 days to go so everyone keep everything crossed.

Sally B is still minus Engine so it looks like she wont be taking part despite some very very strong efforts on there behalf.

Has there been any news on Sally B’s new engine ?

As it is getting close to showtime and according to duxford update she is still missing her port outer.

Yes, availability of components in the wartime was a lot better than these days. But facilities were not. With the FL raid in 1.5 weeks time, the Sally B team may feel similar pressure as the erks 65 years ago.

I would say the facilities on a WW2 USAAF B-17 base in WW2 were no different than the Sally-B team have at the their displosal…..and the WW2 fitters had no financial constraints, no major parts supply issues, no mountain of CAA paperwork to conform with, no manpower problems, the weather is the same today as it would have been at this time of year in WW2 on a Cambridgeshire airfield….

No, I’d say the Sally-B team have a much much harder task than their WW2 counterparts in just about all respects………I really hope they succeed in getting her in the air in time for Leg-Ends.

It’s good to know that there’s at least one person in the world who understands what I mean. 🙂

I think Firebird was referring to what the guys from WW2 would do to fix a broken engine rather than Sally B’s situation.
.

He was (in response to Gliderspits’s comments), although he was being slightly sarcastic – in the nicest possible way :).

Presumably Gliderspit was thinking more about the pressure of war and poor weather conditions under which many B-17 engines must have been changed on exposed East Anglian airfields in WWII – not an enviably task. As Firebird said, their only advantage over modern day counterparts was their ability to drive over to their units engine store and simply sign out a brand new factory built replacement!

Err……they just unpacked another fresh new engine out of the crate and fitted it….back in the air next day.
D

Great news, it’s all go then.
Just one question, considering the previous air seperation of the past performances of SB and PL, given the unique opportunity, will the 3 B-17’s be allowed to fly in close formation or not, are there rules governing this at airshows.
Being one of those lucky enough to witness the filming of ‘Memphis Belle’, the sight of 5 B-17s approaching the airfield and doing a run in and break was never to be forgotten, I was reminded of it while having a quick peek at ‘Tora, Tora, Tora’ the other day.
The sight of these 3 gems lining up for take off together may not happen again over here, I can assure you it is an awsome thing to see, the noise, the smell, the creaking of the airframes, I never thought I would see it again. Dump your RIAT tickets and get to DX, you won’t regret it.

I agree. It makes you think how the guys kept the aircraft servicable 65 years ago.

And as for traffic problems in and out or having to park a distance away….??? I didn’t have a problem last year when I went on the Harley:D

Lets hope for the best regarding Sally B. If she doesn’t make in time, then that’s sad but at least they did their absolute best to try. Can’t demand anything else. They have my biggest respect those people.

I agree. It makes you think how the guys kept the aircraft servicable 65 years ago. That were miracles on a daily basis.
