Duxford Access

I see on the Duxford website that Hangar 1 will be emptied after January 10th and Concorde, Comet and the Vulcan will be positioned outside.
Also part of Hangar 2 will be used for storage only and some of the aircraft (like the Sunderland) will not be accessible to the public. See:- http://duxford.iwm.org.uk/server/show/ConWebDoc.1688

A Question of Funding!

I have looked at the various comments regarding access at Duxford, see my own thoughts below:-

Sadly folks Duxford has the same basic problem as every other aviation museum in the United Kingdom, funding! The level of available finance determines the quality and size of the available display space, Duxford’s pockets are better filled than most, but they are not bottomless.

Unhappily state funding is poor and unfortunately we who are involved in running any sort of museum facility; do not in general have access to the kind of philanthropic aid that has been available to certain well known institutions in the USA!

In essence we all need increased funding, the question is who does it come from?

‘Preciate that and i love the fluidity of the TFC/OFMC hangars and restoration shops – tis the others that are a jumble – still i know how easy it is to criticise from the sidelines and am sorry for me penn’orth, you chaps are still doing superb work (HK Spit resto a case in point) and are still the envy of most European Aviation Museums!

P.S. Welcome anytime Neil -pint awaits- gimme a heads up first….Deterding….?????

I think the movement of aircraft is part of the appeal for me and makes me come back. I can remember what was where last time then ask what work has been done to X aircraft and where the hell such and such has got to. Duxford is a working museum. If everything was totally static, e.g. Hendon I wouldn’t bother coming back as much.

Texantomcat, I need to come see you at Sywell about Deterding some time!

I’m sorry you’ve had a frustrating time of it. Once AirSpace is completed we should have a less fluid situation re aircraft placement. It’s been particularly this way in the last 12 months or so because of a delay on the construction work for AirSpace; there was an initial decanting followed by a constant juggling act to keep both IWM and private aircraft under cover into the autumn and winter.

Add to that the ‘star’ aircraft that have been cycling through the Conservation hangar and I can see it would be difficult for regular visitors.

Much as i love Duxford and applaud everything they are doing – each time i visit the aeroplanes are always mixed up tucked away or difficult to see – theres always a move anticipated – please DX just once be happy with what you’ve got!

Sorry, i hate it when people rant on these boards but i’ve taken lots of visitors there over the years and they have gone away a bit disappointed – usually with ‘it’ll be better next time’ ringing in their ears – I hope i havent offended anyone but it does me ‘ed in!

That’s it pretty much. The fewer aircraft at the mercy of the elements, the better. Also don’t forget that around half the aircraft are suspended, so it shouldn’t be quite as cramped as it looks. There are also mezzanine/gallery levels to allow good views.

Well I was never much into punk so I suppose I’d vote for Ms Springfield over Johnny.

But what has this to do with Duxford?

I would suggest anyone wanting pictures of the aircraft going into the airspace hanger one project do so before they do go in.
the plans for the layout on the IWM web site look even worse than the american museum layout.
why is it the IWM seem set on packing too many aircraft into a small space removing any chance to stand and admire these great british aircraft.
