Duxford Battle

What’s the deal with the yellow Firefly at Duxford? It has been there for years shoved in a corner, but nothing seems to be happening to it?

Surely all they’d need is a dataplate – it works for Spitfires!

Next question,
Is there enough material around to fully restore the second Firefly? Apart from a large sack of money?
Outer wings, etc?

That would be the remains of the wrecks recovered from Curacao some years ago. Pic in an earlier thread.

For the record the other Firefly was not “extensively spares recovered”. There really was very little material that was of any great use

You were lucky to see it Rob, I think it has spent most of the time in storage for the past few years

It came out of storage in 2012 according to http://www.fleetairarm.com/exhibit/fairey-firefly-tt1-z2033/2-4-66.aspx

No it isn’t, it was a straight exchange for the AV-8A Harrier now in IWM North in Manchester

It was on display when we were there in July. Thought it was a great name!

Hoping the IWM batttle “Evlyn Tensions” might make a re-apperance

Unlikely, since the IWM traded Z2033 “Evelyn Tentions” to the Fleet Air Arm Museum fifteen years ago.

Great to hear that the Firefly is being worked on. Is the Lysander progressing too Roobarb?

Hi All,
How come ARC sold the second Firefly ? I thought the idea was to restore the better of the two to airworthiness and keep the second as a spares ship ?

Geoff.

You might have thought that, but then you have never been actually involved in the project. The more complete Firefly was retained and the incomplete example was used as part of a deal to bring a substantially complete Spitfire IX project the other way for potential restoration to fly. The original more complete Firefly has been under survey and now restoration at Duxford for a number of years and it’s not a new happening. For the record the other Firefly was not “extensively spares recovered”. There really was very little material that was of any great use and the retained airframe is almost complete anyway. I am sure it will be a project to keep an eye on as it makes steady progress. Research into it’s original scheme is on-going…
Oh and the other example is not “stored on site”, it’s in the Netherlands.

I was told that when received there were plans to restore it to resemble a MLD Firefly I using tailparts from a crashed example.

The ‘Battle’ that is a Firefly, you mean?

No – the battle is us trying to keep it unrestored!

The Firefly that is 🙂

That was before the financial difficulties that Aviodrome suffered unfortunately. A restored Firefly would surely fill a much needed
hole in our Dutch heritage. Soesterberg would be a safer bet now, but if there are plans to transfer/exchange it I don’t know.
(wishful thinking perhaps)

It was extensively spares recovered before it went to Lelystad (where it is in storage now) as part of the Spitfire deal.

Geoff.

Wasn’t it part of a deal that resulted in Spitfire MJ271 coming the other way?
