I cannot believe I am asking this but, having only recently been to Dx, I wonder if there is anywhere else nearby worth a visit? I will be having a meeting in Fowlmere at lunchtime (I know it was a satellite to Dx and is still an operation airfield) and cannot really go back to Dx again so soon….but equally cannot bear the thought of being next door and not going in. 🙁 Decisions, decisions.

Thanks for the suggestions guys.
I can thoroughly recommend The Chequers in Fowlmere – excellent pint, good food and an aviation theme. Several old pictures inside of the airfield, and they also honoured some of the old fighter squadrons on the pub sign.
Found the airfield memorial at Fowlmere.
I then went on to Dx – couldn’t resist it! – just a quick stop in the car park, and was rewarded with the sight and sound of HFL’s Tr.IX Spitfire taking off. Well chuffed 😀
Then drove past Bassingbourn, and finally tried to find the memorial at Steeple Morden, but only found the village sign!
So there you go – it is possible to have fun around Duxford, without actually visiting Duxford (well, apart from a visit to the car park, it wouldn’t have felt right to not have popped in……)

ps – sorry about the low quality shots – phone camera only, forgot the real one.

At this time of year I would definately go to Madingley at dusk and watch the flag being lowered combined with a trip to the side chapel at Kings College to see the original copy of Rupert Brookes famous poem ‘If I should die on some far foreign field etc’, hand written on War Dept notepaper.
The last time I tried this, one of the vergers chucked me out on the pretext that the place was closing. When I pointed to the well healed and well scrubbed Japanese tourists swarming all over the place he decided to pick an argument.
I came to the conclusion that he didn’t like the idea of a bloke in jeans and tatty A-2 flying jacket accompanied by a young kid with runny nose entering the hallowed chapel, so I told him what to do with it.
I haven’t been back since.
On the other hand it only takes about 20 mins to drive from DX to Mildenhall/Lakenheath for a bit of afternoons noisy entertainment.
