Duxford hangar one simulator

OK.. A slightly odd and totally random Duxford related reminiscence/question….. :p

Does anybody remember the simulator ride that used to take up a sizeable chunk of hangar one, in the corner as you came in through the old entrance. I was quite young when I saw it, probably early nineties (ish). It was much bigger than one of those things that looks like a transit van on a hydraulic rig, more a case of a small cinema that sat still while all of the chairs moved in time with the film. Back then I was more impressed with a film called ‘space race’ involving being drawn into a black hole and then ending up in some kind of futuristic race.

Of more interest, now i am old enough to know better  😀 , was a film that put you in a dogfight over the channel, I can’t just recall the aircraft you were meant to be in or the ‘allies’ around you, but it certainly involved chasing a Buchon. Does anybody know who was involved in the filming, i’m guessing OFMC  , and whether the footage is still available as it was very impressive. Over to you…..

Oh yes, I remember it’s name, the ‘Hughes Rediffusion Simulator’ 😀

This ride brings back memories. I remember having a go about 5-10 years back. It was fantastic, and as has been mentioned, really immersed you in the combat. And yes, the Luftwaffe r/t really added to the realism.

Bring it back, Duxford, please?

I think the chase plane behind the Buchon was the T33, and if I remember correctly when the dogfight was first shown there was no commentry, just the voices of the ‘Luftwaffe’ pilots. It think it ruined it once they added the commentry

🙂 I loved that ride in the simulator/cinema,ok the movements in the seats were limited but it was the next stage up from just sitting and got you immersed.Shame they did away with it

Ah, this brings back memories!

Clicked on the link to watch the film, but if I remember correctly, I don’t think the simulator had the commentary?

Paul

Just back from watching it again, thanks for all the replies. It is also well worth looking at space race, scroll down the list a bit more. I remember seeing the two films in one day, in a way the computer animated space one works, technically, better as the rapid jolting movements were more easily replicated than the subtle rolling and diving of the spitfire, however, the dogfight, especially given its setting is still awe inspiring 😀 .

Anybody thinking of doing the special effects for a WW2 movie would do well to watch this, although it is obviously a very sedate version of a true dogfight, it probably gives a better impression of the flying involved than the arcade style madness in Pearl Harbor…..

No probs Will.

And thanks for the link.

As you say the footage it’s quite stunning.

It must have been quite something seeing it in the actual ride! 😀

Cheers

Found It!!!!

Brilliant! Thanks Bradburger, Ashley, the name ‘Showscan’ was the missing link, just try www.showscan.com, click on movies and then on the dogfight picture at the top of the list (I think we will have to the excuse the reference to gently flying along the coast in an old biplane when….. ) The footage is amazing, and poigniant in so many ways, you all have to see it.

The Buchon was G-BOML, if I remember it was in its yellow nosed colours. The footage was just amazing, and the ride quite convincing. My friend, now a computer games producer, was most impressed!

The Showscan was fantastic, I loved it, much better than your bog standard simulators…it’s a shame we don’t have it anymore 🙁

Blimey Will, you must be doing well for someone in the early hundreds!

Wasn’t it called Showscan or something like that?

Never saw it but read about it somewhere.

I believe the Battle For The Skies Spitfire documentry used out takes from the mock dogfights that were shot for it.

Cheers

Never been in one, but the IWM DX machine was (I believe) OFMCo Spitfire MH434 and Buchon G-BOML.

Any more for any more?
