is this plane still at duxford if it is anyone no when it will be restored

I remember seeing the wings up against the wall in hanger 5. I would prefer to see it painted as the BOB film 111 that was at DX for the filming as it would then represent part of DX’s history, not IWM’s.

There should be a pair of merlin 500s (empty crankcases) and the props somewhere, along with the engine cowlings and all the outer wing sections and fairings. I should know I took the thing aprart in Spain. The reason it’s in so many pieces is, when we did the trial lifts to asertain the wieght and balance the German Helicopter crew kept telling us it was to heavy. The original plan was to lift it with only the props and outer wings removed. I’ve got some video of us pulling it apart somewhere. As to if they ever made there way back to DX who knows.

I’ll check on the engine situation next time I’m at Duxford. Quite important for a flying restoration I’d think. I wouldn’nt hold your breath though. To my untutored eye there would appear to be a lot of work to do on it.

they already have a He111 on display at Hendon, so why not taking the Casa back to the air?

Just to clarify how the Casa got to Duxford. It was all set to be “flown” under a helicopter but the French said “pas au-dessous de notre pays” or somesuch and delayed the whole operation for a year. The insurance was sorted for the following year and it duly arrived, blowing a CAP10 over on arrival. I believe the arrangement for the Germans to fly it in was done through the high standing that Mark Hanna had with the German Air Force through his Phantom flying in the RAF. It was due to be made airworthy but I think it went on the back-burner after Mark’s untimely death. Judging by the IWM’s current policy I would guess that it will appear in the actual colours it wore in service and that would be those of the Spanish Air force. However that will be a long way down the line. Do they have any engines for it?

Paint the left hand side in Spanish airforce markings, the right hand-side in spurious’ or BoB film’ Luftwaffe colours.

Mount it on a slowly-revolving turntable, then even the photographers will be happy.

Yes, there was a cover story in FlyPast (showing the CAF’s one flying) when it arrived at Duxford and that stated it was intended to get it flying. I guess there would have been potential filmwork and airshow work for it.

Serious question, did the Spanish ever use the CASA 2111’s in any sort of combat at all? Or was pretending to be the Luftwaffe the closest they got to war? I believe they were used as trainers for a lot of their career, is that right?

Was the Casa going to be originally rebuilt to fly for the OFMC.If so was there a specific reason for it being transferred to the IWM as a non flyer.?

Funnily enough, I always thought that it was the German Army that brought it to Duxford.

I don’t recall OFMC ever operating helicopters. :confused:
