I have a Russian pen-pal who is coming to the UK – and wants to visit Duxford on the 2nd September to see the Spitfire display.
Unfortunately, on that day, I am going to Moscow – to an airshow !!!! – so I can’t meet up with him.
He has to get to Duxford from London by public transport.
What is the best way to get there from London ???
Train to Royston – or Cambridge ???
Is there a bus service from either to Duxford ???
Any help appreciated…

Don’t know about the Russian, but the Pole has joined the forum a little while ago.
Do you suggest I should leave my car in London, to have better time at Red Lion?
I’m getting jealous now – you guys are coming over here, meeting up, having a good time watching Spitfires and going to pubs !!!
I have to to to Russia, to the Black Sea resort of Gelendzhik to watch Beriev flying boats taxying into the water and strutting their stuff….. 😮

Sorry I’ll miss you – have a great time – and make some new friends.

If you get the Russian and the Pole to join the Forum, they will get to see the build up for the show, add to our ‘little’ community and then join up with some Forumites to watch the display.

Should they get a train to Stevenage from Kings Cross, I am happy to give them alift there and back and thy will get to the Red Lion as well.

Thats not a bad idea if you are preared to do that. And it would save them money, and its faster, 25 min train ride and the trains are every 30 mins.

We went from Stansted to Cambridge by train (very easy from Stansted) and then the Courtesy bus from the train station in Cambridge ever half hour or something. It’s all very easy.
If he’s coming in to London first, then get on a train departingLiverpool Street Station or Kings Cross to Cambridge every hour or more..

If he was to fly into Stansted then he could get a train from there direct to Cambridge and miss out the travelling through London bit altogether. No doubt he would have to change planes in Europe somewhere but that would allow him to use the two economy airlines, Easyjet or RyanAir into Stansted which would probably save some money as well.
AFAIK, he is visiting the UK prior to Duxford for some ‘tourism’ – the Spitfire show is on top of that – so he is, essentially, based in London for the duration of his visit.
Thanks anyway……

Thanks for all the helpful replies guys, it really reaffirms my faith in human beings to get all this help.
Unfortunately I can’t meet up with my pen-pal – but I got a message from a Polish guy who is also travelling to Duxford on the 2nd.
I forwarded his message to my pen-pal – and he (the Russian) is going to contact the Pole – and see if they can come to some mutual arrangement.
There is hope for us all yet – thanks to international aviation…. 🙂

Anytime I would travel to Duxford from London, I always got a train to Cambridge from Kings Cross, then used the Courtesy Bus that leaves from Cambridge train station. These days I normally just stay in a hotel in Cambridge to save myself the bother.

He can get a train from Liverpool St to Cambridge and get off at Whittlesford,it is about a 1 to 2 mile walk from there as an altenative if he is fit. http://www.onerailway.com/timetable/timetables/timetable_picker.asp
