I visited the IWM launch of Airspace as a corporate hospitality venue and very good it was too.
Top marks to whoever had the enterprise to offer bottled Spitfire in amongst the bubbly and fruit juices.
Just one picture – the eerie sight of a Lancaster in its natural element – the dark
(Inexplicably green lit, rather than the blue used elsewhere.)

Nose art? Not really. If it did not carry any while in service then it would not be historically correct to have some painted on her now?
Well if you think like that, then PA-474 didn’t carry any in service, but that doesn’t stop BBMF changing their nose art every few years, thank god they
don’t think like you or it would still have a Gnat’s wing bolted to it. so now we have HC as well as PC.:p 😀 😀 😀

My understanding was that the accident occured 27/7/64 when ‘Rocky’ Stone was demonstrating some single-engined flying, which at some stage metamorphosed into single-engined crashing.
The notion of some ‘accident’ staged for cameras sounds unlikely- some confusion perhaps with John Crewdson pulling up the gear on one of the Mosquitos at Bovingdon, which WAS all filmed, as planned.
Picture (Martin Clayton) shows nacelle with what looks like filler of some sort.

There were stories many years ago that the aircraft was actually being delivered back to Staverton after filming when the undercarriage
“accidentally” collapsed on landing at Staverton and by sheer coincidence the film company happened to have a film crew there filming the landing. Strangely the only sequence missing from the film at that time was alleged to have been a sequence of a Mosquito landing accident! I don’t know how true this story is but it certainly did the rounds for many years and from what I remember of the film sequence it looked amazingly like someone had deliberately retracted the gear. Just wondered if anyone knows the true story.

It’s certainly showing signs of having led a hard life

You are correct Moggy
A little googling reveals that this a/c had an accident at staverton july 63,which damaged the nacelle.
Temp repairs carried out and used for the film ‘mosquito sqdn’ where it was used to simulate a crash landing and also damaged by fire.
Looks like a new port wing was built for it to go on display.

The nacelle on the port side looks a bit rough for sure.
Moggy, nice pic of KB889 btw! It is heart breaking that they didnt do her to run!
It is a shame as the Lancaster is immaculate inside as well.
But it is not the IWMs restoration policy so she is just an exhibit but a welcome one, but you are right if she ran she could have teamed with PA474 and made a lovely sound not heard anywhere (unless you have 8 spits running together) since the 1960s.
Time to end the day dream.

Looks nice, but is it me or does the skin on the mossie above look a bit uneven?

Hey Fresh, the answer iirc is “Nope”. Google the tail number quickly before toys are thrown 🙂

Great picture.
I seem to remember having a Matchbox Lancaster, that came in that green colour.
By: Malcolm McKay - 14th March 2008 at 11:30
I believe that the green colour is the last traces of “Bomber” Harris’ shortlived attempt at combatting global warming by adopting what was considered green resource use at the time. It was suspended when someone timidly pointed out that the AOC Bomber Command had misunderstood the discussion paper. 😀
