BATTLE OF BRITAIN FILM COMMEMORATED AT DUXFORD’S AUTUMN AIR SHOW
The 1968 film The Battle of Britain will be one of the films commemorated at Duxford’s Autumn Air Show on Sunday 12 October.
The film, which has recently been re-released on DVD, was made at Duxford in 1968 and featured a stellar cast including Michael Caine, Laurence Olivier, Edward Fox, Susannah York, Ian McShane, Trevor Howard and Kenneth More. During filming, one of Duxford’s First World War Belfast hangars was spectacularly destroyed when the airfield “came under attack” in a dramatic sequence in the film. The main theme for the Autumn Air Show is Lights, Camera, Action and will feature aircraft which have appeared in films and TV dramas. One of those aviation stars will be Spitfire MH434 which appeared in The Battle of Britain amongst her many film credits.
MH434 is perhaps the most famous of all Spitfires still flying today. Built at Vickers, Castle Bromwich in 1943 and air tested by legendary test pilot Alex Henshaw, MH434 was initially assigned to No 222 Squadron and flown in combat by South African pilot Flt Lt Henry Lardner-Burke DFC (1916-1970) who was credited with seven and a half aerial victories. In all, the aircraft flew 79 operational sorties during the Second World War before being retired from the RAF in March 1945.
MH434’s first film role was Operation Crossbow in 1965 and, since then, the aircraft has gone on to appear in The Battle of Britain, The Longest Day, A Bridge Too Far, Hope and Glory, Hercule Poirot’s Casebook, Over Here and Land Girls as well as a pop video for Fat Boy Slim. This year sees MH434 celebrating 60 years since she first emerged from the factory and visitors to the show will be able to see the aircraft up close on the flight line walk and displaying later in the day.
Among the other aircraft scheduled to appear at the Show will be the original Gipsy Moth which starred in Out of Africa with Meryl Streep and Robert Redford, the P-51 Mustang which appeared in Saving Private Ryan and Empire of the Sun and the B-17 Flying Fortress Sally B which played the Memphis Belle in the film of the same name as well as the Ginger Rogers in the TV drama series We’ll Meet Again. As this is the last major UK air show of the year, air show favourites like the Jaguar, which is celebrating 30 years in RAF service this year and also had a brief starring role in the film Local Hero, are also scheduled to display.
The whole of the Museum will also be open for visitors to enjoy with plenty to see including The Battle of Britain, 100 Years of Flight and the evocative Forgotten War exhibitions, conservation work in progress and the stunning American Air Museum. Special guests at the show will include Battle of Britain pilots, who will be available to meet the public and sign autographs, as well as a mystery guest who will be dropping in by helicopter.
Gates open at 8.00 am and the flying begins at 1.30 pm.
Tickets on the day – Adults £18, Senior Citizens £13, Children £7, Concessions £7.
Nothing really to do with the UK REG2 version of the dvd coming out,the reg 1 is already out as posted earlier.

Did he? Did he?
Do I have to have a DVD player or can I just hold it up to the light?

I think you will find that the U.K. version, when it arrives, will have the ‘extras’. The US one was made in a rush as part of a contractual obligation which is why it does not.
MikeJ’s link just says “The film, which has recently been re-released on DVD” and does not specify that it was only on region 1.

I have the Region 1 version and it’s not too great, the picture is pretty good though and the sound ain’t bad.But there’s no extras! just a trailer! Maybee a biased view but if theres ever a film that deserved to be a Special edition DVD with a 2nd disc crammed full of extras it’s this one! i want dog fights….lots of dog fights! 🙂

I’d love to go to this, but can’t afford it on my own – if there’s anyone in the Cornwall/Devon/Somerset area who would like to go, and is willing to pay a share of the petrol money, and possibly the driving – I have a Honda CRX, which is fun. 😀

Andrew, in the airshow business when there is a couple of hours to go then it will be cutting it fine
By: Andrew-O - 30th September 2003 at 20:19
I hope that more will be added.
The fact that Duxford’s list was marked ‘provisional’ when it was emailed through makes me optimistic that more will be added, although we are cutting it a bit fine since there’s only a week and a half to go !

I am looking forward to the Hawk display .Shame about the La-9 though.
Is there a possibility for any additions to the line up before the airshow day?
By: grayfly - 30th September 2003 at 17:21
Anyone know which B-25 will be appearing??
By: gdenney - 30th September 2003 at 15:57
Well, all I can say is that the HAC Storch and Spitfire are due to fly.
