Duxford May Show Participants

This is taken from Military Airshows in the UK and a list the IWM kindly sent me.

Lancaster
B17
P47
Breitling Fighters
Storch
Swordfish
Gladiator
Spitfire (Doesn’t say which one)
Anson
Piper Cub
Canberra
Tucano
Hawk
Harrier
Jaguar
Tornado GR4
The Falcons
Extra/Sukhoi duo (Military Airshows site lists this as the Matadors, so there may well be a separate Extra pair; Power Aerobatics may be provisionally booked for the show, so it could be them).

Overall, it may be a small line up so far, but it’s nice to see the Canberra on the programme, as well as items like the Breitling Fighters, Anson and Matadors.

The IWM Duxford Press Release says that two surviving Dambusters will be attending the May airshow as guests of honour, but not who they are. Anyone know?

I wasn’t being totally serious – just making a point.

Belgian markings?

As Edmund Blackadder once said about the French, ‘we’ve been at war with these people for 200 years, why would we want to save them’.

Adolf Hitler himself said ‘Britain is not our natural enemy’, well according to the ‘Battle of Britain’ film he did, anyway!

Not that I’m agreeing with a Nazi dictator you understand, it just proves the point about old enemies.

I doubt if vandalism of war graves is much of a problem in Germany as I expect that the Germans show respect to all warriors in the same manner that we do.

We’re not supposed to like the French, they’re the olde enemy.
It’s those nasty Germans that caused the confusion. Untiil WW1 we’d been at war with the French on and off for ever.:)

I’ve never forgiven the powers-that-be for finishing the last ever Finningley with Patrouille de France.

Back in the Dark Ages, or more accurately, the late 60s, there was a pub a few miles SE-ish of Maidstone called “The Battle of Britain”.
It had a #*#*#* French roundel on the sign!
Almost put me off the beer I wasn’t old enough to buy.

Good point Moggy – except that in Luftwaffe markings it represents the Nazi race and the mass genocide of millions of people! Maybe I am too liberal but I don’t see the vandalism of a few morons is enough to condem a country.

Never!

Represent a load of cheese-eating surrender-monkeys who defile our lads graves?

I think not.

The Storch was built in France with the Jacobs radial and saw service with the French military in that configuration . I don’t have a problem with it but I would rather see her fly in French markings

The Harrier display is always good although the noise it makes on running up is a pain if it covers the sound of a prop aircraft displaying. What I’d like to see is a Harrier display using sky hook. Obviously it’s not going to happen and I dountv there are any sky hooks left but it would be different.

It’s also good to see the Storch displaying has it been re-engined yet with the Argus unit as I always thought it looked a little stupid with the radial engine.

I do.
And why can’t the jets be sent to the holding point furthest away from the crowd to do their running up?

Moggy and Lancman, Tut. Tut. Shame on you. Have you no pride in what this country can do?

The Harrier is the only decent thing this countrys remains of an aircraft industry has produced for years. It was so good that even tha Yanks pinched it (and they still call it the Harrier).
Bowing to the crowd, together with all the going backwards stuff is something that nothing else can do without looking like a giant egg whisk!

You might think that a bowing Harrier is boring because you’ve seen it before, but I bet you’ve seen that same Lancaster a few times and I bet you don’t call that boring!!

“And I hate Harrier displays, and will somebody tell them that bowing to the crowd isn’t clever any more?”

Thats why I shot down the one that tried it in my town.

Thanks for clarifying David – How stupid of me!

I must admit, I too don’t really have a problem with jets at Duxford shows, so long as they keep away from Flying Legends! Although, it was rather annoying having the Harrier run up whilst the Breitling Fighters were displaying last year, but I guess they’ve got to do their pre-take off checks somewhere.

Am I not alone in looking forward to seeing the Canberra again (assuming it’s flown and fully serviceable in time)?

tfcep – apparantly there is a war going on in Iraq so I guess they want as many Harriers over there as they can get !

I don’t have a problem with Duxford having jets in a display especially the May show as it’s very much aimed at the ‘joe public’
and not enthusiasts. Regarding the Tornado at last year’s show
they usually run the apu up so they can check the systems out and a have a good usable ‘spare’ rather than have the hassle of
unblanking a jet and going through all the checks only to find it has a csas fault.

I’m with you on the bowing Harrier Moggy-BORING!

BUT, remember when you FIRST saw it? There’s many a little kid who’s going to be going ‘Ooh’ at that sight for the very first time!

…but just before you think I’m being all generous and soft for once, I bet that very same kid will be held aloft on his father’s shoulders, who tells him loudly that the Harrier they are looking at is a Hurricane, and the whole family-including the wife who wore her white stillettos and too much gold again-have been camped behind a massive windbreak on the flight line since before dawn; in which case, sod the bloody Harrier!!!

I hope they’ve learned from last time

Now I’ve nothing much against paraffin-burners in their place, however in my considered opinion Duxford isn’t one of them.

If they do turn up, and the Patriot battery having shot down a significant portion of out Tornado fleet might rule this out, I hope they park the bl**dy things over the other side. Or at Fowlmere, or Cambridge, or Perranporth.

For those who didn’t suffer the helicopter-infested show last May, the erks started up the APU on both Tornados (They have to bring a spare) at about four the previous afternoon and left them running through a sizeable chunk of the real aircraft display, effectively drowning out some super piston-engine music.

And even when Tornado Display One was at the hold for take-off they left the spare running, only switching it off once the evil bird had lurched into the air.

And I hate Harrier displays, and will somebody tell them that bowing to the crowd isn’t clever any more?

Moggy

Damien – do you know the reason why the Jag and Harrier pulled out of Kemble?
