Folks-
Here’s the deal….I’m looking for a good AERIAL photo of the Duxford field….the whole thing, not just a building or two, the whole kit and kaboodle….I’ve seen them out there, just don’t know where to get them. In return, I’ll trade you an 8×10 (size negotiable) of any of the WWII birds I have air to air pics of…and that list includes Liberator, Mustang, Corsair, B-17, B-25, Spitfire, Firefly, P-40, C-45, Kate (replica), L-bird, TBM, T-6, and some others…lest you doubt my word, I offer up the P-40 shot from Breckenridge, TX back in 1995…this is the CAF’s bird, currently under repair…drop me a line if you can deliver….it’ll have to ship to the US, but I’ll make it worth your while.

“Why did they scrap the Convair?”
The Convair had sat outside ever since it arrived, and was very much the worse for wear.It would’ve taken huge effort and expense to restore and the type is not too rare,so the decision to give her the chop was taken.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but I have a vague memory of reading something about the IWM not actually owning the machine, and that it still belonged to the USAF.

I’ll try. Here goes….
Right, starting from the bottom left corner, the main buildings are:
Land Warfare Hall.
American Air Museum.
Hangar 5 – the conservation hangar. Where the static museum exhibits are restored, and also the paintshop. Currently contains Spitfire 24, Jaguar, Buccaneer, Airspeed Ambassador, Swordfish, F100, CF100.
Hangar 4 – the Air Defence of Great Britain. Mainly static but also home to HAC’s Spitfire V, BM597.
Gap where a hangar was blown up for The Battle of Britain film in 1968.
Hangar 3 – home of the Old Flying Machine Company, the IWM’s maritime exhibits (midget submarine, lifeboat, lump of belt armour from the Tirpitz, and some of TFC’s flyers (mainly the Grumman cats and the Skyraider)
Hangar 2 – home of The Fighter Collection, and various other airworthy and static aircraft.
Hangar 1 – the Superhangar, soon to be even bigger. Home of Concorde, Vulcan, Lancaster, Mosquito, York, Comet, Sunderland, SR71, and lots more.
Between Hangar 1 and the runway threshold, there are more buildings today than in the picture; this is where ARC and HFL live.
Aeroplanes visible, this time working down from the top:
VC10 at the head of a long line of airliners, including Brittania, Hermes fuselage, BAC111, not sure what else.
Between hangars 3 and 4, looks like the Viscount.
In front of hangar 4, Shackleton.
In front of hangar 5, Victor.
Sitting forlornly on it’s own right at the bottom of the picture, the Convair VT29. Now deceased.
Hope that helps.

Just looked at Damien B’s post and superb picture. My only comment is that if the foreshortening continues it will soon be best to ask for Runway 15 or 33 due to the fact that 06/24 has shrunk to marginal for even a Cub.

Great shots and suggestions, folks, much appreciated….looks like I should have been on this forum all along, things get DONE here, no dawdling around like on some other sites. Damien, the computer I use from home has no printer on it right now, but I know where I can use a printer, so send the 2Mb photo and I’ll print it when I get a chance….everyone else, your help was appreciated….looks like I need to get some bits for my computer, a printer and some cords for my scanner so I can get THAT back up and running again, the pics I’m sending are just saved in my computer’s memory from a year or so ago ….

Corsair,
Looks like Damien has what you need.
However here is the link to my Legends pictures post on Avi8 with the aerial shots:

Using the the arrows in the left hand column you can move any direction you like on the photo, & zoom in or out by using the + or – or the scale dropdown

Damien-
Yours wins….exactly what i’m looking for…..the satellite photo was interesting, but cut of the ends of the field. So, whaddya want for a copy of that print? Name your plane…I’ll see if I have it air to air. What is that big long white building right out front of the superhangar? I don’t recall that being there…a new addition or a tent that thaey put up for a special event?

Errr… I obviously should have said that, because that is what my link is in my earlier reply, it goes directly to the aerial photo of DX.

Good to be over here….things seem to happen quicker in this forum…tho I still check avi8 also….both are good, but this one makes photo downloading so simple….

Hi Corsair. I agree with you this site is faster than avi8.
You could try www.multimap.com for the aerial photo of DX. Where it asks for the post code insert CB2 4QR This may or may not be suitable for your requirements

For a vertical view of DX which you can zoom in & out of have a look at DX from space

Corsair
Good to see you on this forum mate.
I wonder if those ones I posted on Avi8 that my Dad took from the Tiger Moth at Legends this year are any good?
EDIT:
Just checked them but sadly not all of the airfield is in shot. Still I’m sure someone will have what you’re looking for.
Cheers
Paul
