Hi,
I spent the day at Duxford yesterday. Piccies here of the current state of the occupants inside Hangars 2 and 5:

Looks like the Canada is about to get a new paint job, and the BBMF Spitfire AB910 is undergoing the same. Loads of maintenance going on, as you would expect, and the long-term projects are showing signs of progress.

Indeed it is 🙂
My younger brother Andrew has been working on it too.
I’m in the process of moving house so I have not had the opportunity to see it yet but I have been kept up to date with Dad’s pictures.

RE: Duxford projects current status
BBMF don’t start operating in earnest until March at the earliest,so they still have about a month to complete the job.Judging by the pics,it looks like they might be finished sooner.I’d imagine that there’d be some proving flights around the Duxford area before she headed off back to Conningsby, and it would probably be done by one of the BBMF guys.

RE: Duxford projects current status
Whens she due to be finished and is she going to be test flown or just picked up by bbmf and flown back to coningsby for testing?

Rant…Rant…Rant (Sore point!) Would any one know if the aircraft going into HENDON were plastic. Think of the advantages less load hanging from the ceiling, they don’t corrode, most of ‘Joe’ public would never notice and we get to see the originals on the ground or possibly back in the air!

I remember seeing that P-51 in a shop window down Oxford Street, i can’t remember the name but it sold expensive poor quality flight jackets for the fashion world. It was painted in the red and white candyman racing colours. Actually i think the shops name was Avirex.

RE: Duxford projects current status
The AAM Mustang has a slightly different make up, being constructed largely of wood and plastic. Mind you with half the airframes in there who would know if they were real or replicas seeing as they are hanging from the roof…..rant rant rant……

And made of plastic

RE: Duxford projects current status
But….as with the EAA’s XP-51, unless you re-skin the aircraft, losing airframe history in the process, the only way to get a reasonable finish is to paint it as, if the skins are scratched, there’s not much else you can do unfortunately. As mentioned in previous posts the IWM were in such a rush to get it into the AAM, that it didn’t get much attention lavished on it, hence the general ‘tatty’ appearance. The Mustang in there is in the same predicament though, painted and not natural metal.

RE: Duxford projects current status
If memory serves me right it’s an A model fuselage with a H model wing. And the real things were left natural metal, not painted. Usually high ranking officers had theirs polished up a bit.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 30-01-03 AT 07:40Â PM (GMT)]Hi Doughnut,
Yep,that manky Sabre was swapped for a perfectly good Meteor Mk4,and the RAFM were up in arms about it at the time, quite rightly in my opinion. The IWM were keen to get thier hands on an F86 in time for the opening of the AAM,and in thier haste they didn’t choose a particularly good example.Certainly the AAM Sabre wasn’t worth a Mk.4 Meteor! x(
In answer to Sadsack’s question,I seem to remember she’s painted-it just makes you wonder how much filler it’s covering up! lol

RE: Duxford projects current status
I never thought the AAM F-86 looked right, is it correct that it was exchanged for the Meteor 4 that used to be a Duxford. Surely the IWM could have found a better example else where?

RE: Duxford projects current status
I never can work out if early USAF aircraft have metal finishes or silver paint – that Sabre looks as if its painted?

RE: Duxford projects current status
The former AAM Sabre is a complete lash up.I’ve seen better looking Airfix kits!It has the wings from one model, the fuselage from another etc etc,and so it doesn’t fit together properly.I think they might have plans to rework it and make it into something more presentable.

RE: Duxford projects current status
I assume they are not planning on putting that Sabre back into the AAM for a while then? I dont suppose anyone will park it up next to the flying example?

lol…Looks like a Swordfish windscreen to me.I think the hole on the screen is an aperture for a sighting device of some sort,so they haven’t butchered the screen for the sake of a giggle!
