Duxford Questions

Hi Guys,

Outsider alert here, from the commercial junkies.

I’m in Duxford this weekend, 5 of us staying at the Red Lion Inn on Saturday night. Planning to arrive Saturday morning and visit the museum.

What I would like to know, is some ideas to do on Sunday and the Saturday evening, that doesn’t involve excessive amounts of drink 😀
Any suggestions for a restaurant nearby to have a chat over dinner?

None of us fly back until Sunday evening after 1800, so have most of Sunday to fill.

Suggestions welcome and much appreciated.

Thanks

. Is it one that Flypast have covered?

I think they did cover it at the time.

The pub is in safe hands now. The Landlady is very keen on the historical aspects of the pub and has even gone to the trouble of getting a small explanatory booklet printed to give an outline of the history to enquiring visitors.

Yes, it took several years but Corpus Christi College that owned it and Greene King the brewery were persuaded to protect the priceless ceiling during the four year restoration.

Much credit to James Chainey, the ex-RAF guy who painstakingly researched the history of the ceiling and deciphered most of the inscriptions. He passed away a few years ago – we owe him a debt.

Sounds like quite the preservation story. Is it one that Flypast have covered? If not, I hope they do. That sort of thing so easilly gets made over into a ghastly (sorry, but it usually is) Irish* theme pub with fake clogs nailed to the wall and the pub’s realy history ends up in the skip out the back.

*Sometimes equally awful ‘Strine’ one to be fair.

It’s now a great pub serving good quality and plentiful food courtesy of Sian the landlady.

The food at the Red Lion is good enough to make venturing out to seek a meal optional rather than compulsory. Even the consumption of Broadside may be ommitted if wished.

The station at Whittlesford is but a few paces from the Lion, so an evening in Cambridge is possible. Lots to do there, but don’t miss out on a Diet Coke at the Eagle in their famous RAF bar.

You aren’t that far from Old Warden at least in Australian terms – less than an hour – that would fill in any sunday in my book!!!

Usual sterotypical image 🙂

I don’t drink, if it’s an acquired, I’ll live without acquring it as I have enough bad habit.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. Cemetary sounds good and I can try a restaurant a day.

Thank you 🙂

But aren’t you Irish, in which case isn’t that what’s expected, I thought it was your National sport.

You could always pop across to Old Warden, it’s not that much of a drive from DX.

There is a pretty good Chinese in the village that is up the road a bit from the red Lion (Hang on, I’ll look at Multimap) . . .

. . .

. . .

. . .

Sawston. Head towards Cambridge, turn left and fork off right. It is up there.

This is a restaurant that has the Memorial Flight Association seal of approval. I have spent a few happy nights in there with various French types.

You could go to the Chequers in Fowlmere for Saturday night. Every time I have been the food has been fantastic.
Not sure what to suggest for Sunday. There is lots to see in Cambridge if you have not been before. You also may want to visit the American War cemetary at Madingley which is very moving.
